<p>I've finished: Doughter from the Dark by Marina & Sergey Dyachenko</p><p>Daughter from the Dark is perhaps the opposite of a cozy found family novel. </p><p>This is a Russian novel, the universe isn't there to cuddle you. </p><p>The view point character, D.J. <p>I finished reading the final installment of Cadwell Turnbull's fantasy Convergence Saga trilogy. It was very good, and I recommend it, particularly if you are tired of what I call "formulaic fantasy." This is different by a mile. </p><p>It's always an advantage when a trilogy is finally available in its entirety. This was not easy to keep up with, in long breaks between installments coming out.</p><p>The books explore themes that are closely tied to current events: marginalization, othering, the process of deciding who is a "monster," the evolution of power and its effects on others and those who wield it, the function of community, and also much wider questions about the cosmos, how we got here, our place, our purpose. There's an old man and his grandson, both who stay at home far too much. There's a daughter tired of being the go between with her mother and brother, especially when the brother takes full advantage of the situation knowing he's the favorite child.
