The undead witch that rules the space pirates, known as the Dead Queen, has finally been defeated. That only makes it worse for the witches that pulled it off. She’s livid and coming for them, at least once she gets her star ship back under control…

(Left) The cover of Legacy of Newts, by Owen Tyme.

In the background dawn, as seen from space, above a blue world.

In the foreground is a line drawing of a red spotted newt, in white. The lines of the newt are outlined in black, to help it stand out. The interior of the line drawing has been filled with the image of a spiral galaxy in red, orange and yellow, with a blue color that shades to white at the center, which lines up with the newt's head. The galaxy almost looks like fire.

(Right) The background is a blue and orange nebula, with the following text over it:

“You gotta be real strong, real bright, real quick, or real lucky to survive drawing *attention*. Which are you?”

“I’m quick, Amelia is bright, Marta is strong and all three of us have been lucky, after a fashion: if we didn’t have bad luck, then I suppose we wouldn’t have any luck at all.”

(Lower Left) The cover of Forgotten Legends displays a child reading in bed as a black, smoky monster with red eyes peeks out from under the bed.

(Lower Center Left) The cover of The Third Wish displays a wizard on top of a mountain, looking to the sunset, over a city of sky scrapers that have plants growing on them. In his shadow is the red eyed creature from Forgotten Legends.

(Lower Center Right) The cover of Dark Moon displays a witch and wizard fighting back to back, holding pistols, while objects fall around them, with the moon behind their heads.

(Lower Right) The cover of The Inverted Glass displays a line art hourglass with a white figure in black sand at the bottom, with a black figure in white sand upside-down in the top. Balanced on a scale are a heart and a feather.

I review White Feathers, Crimson Leaves by Josh Reynolds on my reading blog. It's his new Legend of the Five Rings tie-in series and while it can't replace Daidoji Shin for me, it's interesting and atmospheric horror fantasy. Out today.

#bookstodon, my TBR list is getting dangerously short. Please recommend new(ish) books in #fantasy, #historical and/or #QueerRomance.

My favourite authors include but are not limited to:
Natasha Pulley, Gabby Hutchinson Crouch, KJ Charles, AJ Demas, T Kingfisher, Juniper Butterworth, Alexis Hall, CM Waggoner, Emily Tesh, Lissa Evans, Freya Marske, Caitlyn Rozakis, Zen Cho, Naomi Novak, Antonia Hodgson, Edgar Cantero

I don’t like anything too cosy (I need plot) or too dark. Very rarely like anything labelled a “BookTok sensation” or YA, or that has a contemporary setting. Prefer older protagonists, or at least ones who are out of their teens. Prefer standalones. Don’t mind a bit of murder mystery mixed into those other genres.

In particular wanting to try new/debut authors. Indie recommendations very welcome, but nothing that’s only on Amazon. Kobo Plus reccs welcome.

If it’s very popular, assume I’ve read it or don’t want to :)

Thanks!

Ebook and paperback: https://books2read.com/WrathOfTheSky

Zechariah Jacobs has angered a vast empire that spans a third of the galaxy, which is far too much for his planet to stand against, but in a clash of wizards and magic versus technology, it’s hard to say which will win.

(Left) The cover of Wrath of the Sky, by Owen Tyme.

On a black background, a planet much like earth burns, set aflame. The flames are on the top and sides, but haven't yet reached the bottom.

(Right) An ogre stands on a rocky cliffside path, clearly quite upset, with both his head and arms raised as he cries out! The background is blue sky with white clouds. The following quote is laid over the top of the scene:

Winzon grinned evilly. With great slowness and ceremony, he undid the draw-string of his sack and up-ended it, dropping an ogre skull at the brute’s feet!

The massive ogre’s entire demeanor changed in an instant! He backed away, carefully stepping out of reach of Winzon’s ax, even though it was still strapped to his back!

The brute whispered, “Ogre-slayer!”

Ebook omnibus: https://books2read.com/AshenBladesOpenWounds

The arch-demon, Pride, leads demon-kind in an ancient plan to open a gate between worlds, so vast demon armies might march forth and conquer, but opening a portal requires both energy equivalent to a nuclear explosion and the cooperation of a half-demon, to stabilize it. However, the only half-demon available has made it her life mission to kill all demons.

@bookstodon
#author #indieauthor #writing #fantasy #actionadventure #fiction #books

$(Background) A fractal pattern of red and orange that resembles a demonic portal. (Center) Pride needs a half-demon to stabilize the portal between worlds. There’s just one hitch: she hates him. One stubborn half-demon vs. all of demon-kind? It could go either way... (Top Left) The cover of She Hunts Demons, by Owen Tyme, illustrated by Ryan Johnson. Sitting on the roof of a building in New York City is a teenage girl with a Japanese short sword. The image is black and white, aside from a few details in blue. (Bottom Left) The cover of She Goes to War, by Owen Tyme, illustrated by Ryan Johnson. Three people in tiger-stripe camouflage crouch in the jungle, including a teen girl, a soldier and a huge cat-man with black fur. (Bottom Right) The cover of the novel, Demon for President!, by Owen Tyme, illustrated by Ryan Johnson. Two politicians (Democrat and Republican) shake hands, as if for a photo-op, while a city burns behind them and the flag of the United States waves in the smoke. (Top Right) The cover of the book bundle, Ashen Blades: Open Wounds, by Owen Tyme, which includes a Japanese sword, a pistol and a pineapple grenade on a wooden surface.$

Kimuli translates to flower, a thing that is supposed to be beautiful. A symbol of love and cuteness. But since I have an evil mind, I thought of a man turning into a flower monster, and haunting his wife. At least I stayed away from gore, so perhaps there's still some cuteness.

Give it a watch, and a boost if you enjoy it!

(Right) The same world from the cover orbits a purple gas giant, with a stream of flame above it, which may be the phoenix, with the following text over the top:

“We’re in a human-made, goblin-enchanted spacecraft, powered by a dryad that’s under the mistaken impression she’s a nuclear reactor, half-piloted by a pixie and half-piloted by a human.”

“Is there anywhere we can go we won’t be shot on sight?”

finished reading The Tainted Cup 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
by Robert Jackson Bennett.

A murder mystery fantasy novel - why is this a first for me?! Fairly standard whodunnit which escalates to political intrigue, made distinctive by very cool world-building: an empire built to defend against leviathans attacking from the sea, whose bodily fluids enable a raft of fantastical bio-enhancements. Interesting characters and the potential for more fleshing out give the series much promise.
