Please recommend new(ish) books in <a href="/tags/fantasy/" rel="tag">#fantasy</a>, <a href="/tags/historical/" rel="tag">#historical</a> and/or <a href="/tags/queerromance/" rel="tag">#QueerRomance</a>.</p><p>My favourite authors include but are not limited to:<br>Natasha Pulley, Gabby Hutchinson Crouch, KJ Charles, AJ Demas, T Kingfisher, Juniper Butterworth, Alexis Hall, CM Waggoner, Emily Tesh, Lissa Evans, Freya Marske, Caitlyn Rozakis, Zen Cho, Naomi Novak, Antonia Hodgson, Edgar Cantero</p><p>I don’t like anything too cosy (I need plot) or too dark. Very rarely like anything labelled a “BookTok sensation” or YA, or that has a contemporary setting. Prefer older protagonists, or at least ones who are out of their teens. Prefer standalones. Don’t mind a bit of murder mystery mixed into those other genres.</p><p>In particular wanting to try new/debut authors. Indie recommendations very welcome, but nothing that’s only on Amazon. Fairly standard whodunnit which escalates to political intrigue, made distinctive by very cool world-building: an empire built to defend against leviathans attacking from the sea, whose bodily fluids enable a raft of fantastical bio-enhancements. Title: Funny story made me go haha

Look, this story made me laugh, and that alone is worth at least 4 stars to me. Why'd it make me laugh? I'll tell you why, it's just plain witty. This is the kind of story to label accidents as ‘natural selection’. It's the kind of wit that makes you stomp and pout when it's aimed at you because it's mean and unfair, but when it's aimed at other people? You giggle because it's hilarious.

The actual story is bleh. It's carried by the wit of its prose and characters. | don't really know what's going on, | think there's a prophecy? One of the characters is trying to go east, but even he can’t remember why he wants to? Man, | don’t know. Herschel doesn't know either, and the wizard with the long name is still trying to figure out what's happening

Speaking of, the characters are as funny as the prose Lyean-whatever-the-hell-his-name-is is a massive asshole and it's funny to watch him be ajerk to others, plus he's got these different pieces of himself that chime in Disco Elysium style that only enhance the humor. Herschel kind of has that too towards the beginning, but it's played down in favor of making it L-Sorcerer's defining trait. Herschel is funny too, in a weird kind of way. Redilistically, I'd probably slap him in real life, but watching him infuriate others is funny. There's a bunch of other POV characters too, and they're mostly funny.

Anyway, read the story. It's funny.
