👋 🤔 In today's world there's a war on truth and now with AI it's often more difficult to differentiate a real news story from one that is fake.
🧵 1/2
When I read a headline from a 'new to me', unfamiliar source, I try to remember to check it's credibility before I trust and share the article.
Here are steps I take to fact check a source and perhaps you might find this helpful:
1: Is this story reported elsewhere? (run a search)
2: If it is, and the additional sources are credible : more than likely it's true so, share✅ , if not then I proceed as follows:
If the story is Not reported elsewhere, I *combine* the following steps:
a) ask trustworthy friends if they've heard of the source
b) run a media bias check
c) check that source's previously published articles for credibility (see step #1)
d) Analyze the text/writing style and structure of the article--often AI generated print/writing appears "off", 'sterile'.
And a new step I just now discovered, thanks to @oliver_schafeld , is check the source to view information about the website using this link :
e) https://lookup.icann.org/en/lookup
f) trust my "gut feeling" (often our subconscious picks up clues something is amiss. )
