The dream became a reality in 1999 with the introduction of the euro for accounting and electronic payments across 11 EU countries.
The highlight came in 2002, when physical euro coins and banknotes were launched, marking the largest cash changeover in history.
Today, nearly 350 million people in 20 EU countries rely on the euro daily.
