elsa lanchester was born #otd in 1902 to bohemian parents who refused - as a snub to societal convention - to be legally married. her mum, edith ‘biddy’ lanchester, was a feminist & a socialist who later worked as secretary to eleanor marx (daughter of the famous karl, he who boils people's piss to this very). initially a dance student under the tutelage of isadora duncan, elsa made her film debut in 1925’s ‘the scarlet woman’.
