Today, we have opened five non-compliance investigations under the Digital Markets Act.
It concerns:
🔹Alphabet’s rules on steering in Google Play
🔹Alphabet’s self-preferencing in Google Search
🔹Apple’s rules on steering in the App Store
🔹Apple's choice screen for Safari
🔹Meta’s ‘pay or consent model’

🔴 We designated Apple’s iPadOS as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act.
Our investigation shows that its tablet operating system is an important gateway for businesses to reach consumers due to its large and commercially attractive user base and its importance for specific use cases.
We also discovered that Apple leverages its large ecosystem to disincentivise end users from switching to other tablet operating systems.
We will keep monitoring #DMA compliance very closely.
Apple’s new slogan should be “act different.”
Today, we informed Apple of our preliminary view that its App Store rules are in breach of the Digital Markets Act, as they prevent app developers from freely steering consumers to alternative channels for offers and content.
We also opened a new non-compliance procedure over concerns that its new contractual requirements for third-party app developers and app stores fall short of ensuring effective #DMA compliance.
🤠 In 2022, a new law rolled into town – the Digital Markets Act.
🏇 In 2023, it rode into action to make the “too big to care” platforms a thing of the past.
⭐ This year, so far, it has left no stone unturned.
Here are some of the major #DMA developments you might have missed in 2024 👇
"For legal reasons the Torment Nexus will not be made available to our valued customers in the European Union. We apologise for the inconvenience." ;)
Apple must provide free and effective interoperability to third-party developers and businesses with hardware and software features controlled by iOS and iPadOS.
Today, we've initiated two specification proceedings to assist Apple in complying with its interoperability obligations under the Digital Markets Act.

Today, we found that X should not be designated as a core platform service under the Digital Markets Act.
We concluded that X does not qualify given that our investigation revealed that X is not an important gateway for business users to reach end users.
We will continue to monitor the developments in the market concerning this service should any substantial changes arise.

Apple must ensure iPadOS complies with obligations under the Digital Markets Act.
This means Apple must:
🌐 Allow users to set their default web browser
📱 Permit alternative app stores
🎧 Ensure accessory devices like headphones and smart pens can access iPadOS features
We will now assess whether these measures effectively meet the #DMA obligations, taking also into consideration the input of interested stakeholders.

We sent preliminary findings to Apple to ensure free and effective interoperability under the Digital Markets Acts.
Apple should open iOS features like notifications, AirPlay, and AirDrop to third-party devices, enhancing innovation and user choice.
Apple should also improve the transparency and predictability of the process developers follow to request interoperability with iOS/iPadOS features, including fair handling of rejections and clear timelines.

The EU’s digital policies are about innovation and consumer choice.
Today, we’re acting to ensure that Apple complies with the Digital Markets Act.
Our two decisions concern:
➡️ Better iOS connectivity. Connected devices of all brands will work better with iPhones.
➡️ Fairer process for developers seeking interoperability with iPhone and iPad features.

Europe isn’t just following — it's setting the standard.
Thanks to the Digital Markets Act, big tech companies must play fair, become more competitive and more user-friendly.
We're making major progress towards fairer digital markets:
✅ More freedom to choose services
✅ Improved data portability tools
✅ Launch of alternative app stores
✅ Greater interoperability with third-party services
The message is clear: in Europe, the digital economy must work for people.
Does anyone here have information about the status of Matrix-WhatsApp bridging/interoperability? (Maybe @matrix?) 🤔
Ads coming to WhatsApp is making me much more frustrated than I already was. I haven’t been updating the app since the introduction of Meta AI, but now WhatsApp is demanding that I update within 15 days or I won’t be able to use the app anymore.
So, the time has come: I have two weeks to backup and quit WhatsApp for good.
Since I’m here: could I also ask for your advice for local-only, not cloud, software that can backup ALL my #WhatsApp chats and store them locally in a browsable format/database? I found out about WhatsApp-Chat-Chat-Exporter but I’d like to learn more before testing it out.
Boosts welcome, let’s help each other and resist the broligarchy together! ✨
Damn, we wouldn’t have all this trouble if only the #DMA was actually enforced 🤬
