“China noted a rise in outpatient cases from 7.5% to 16.2% and severe hospitalized cases from 3.3% to 6.3%”
The latest COVID variant is sweeping across Asia, causing “razor blade throat” and other concerning symptoms.
The US dismantles reporting, remove access to testing & may restrict vaccines.
Wear a well fitted respirator, it could save a life.

There are two non-fiction books that haunt me in the pandemic. The first is The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Plague in History (originally subtitled The Epic Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History) by John M. Barry, about the 1918-1920 Spanish Flu pandemic.
It has made me feel particularly Cassandra-like in our own pandemic, because we absolutely know how pandemics work, how to manage them, and what goes wrong when we don't. 1/n
Just published from my archives, an interview with KD Drackert, a local Long #Covid activist, #LGBTQIA+ performance artist and all-around fab person. They are a founder of our mask bloc/air filter lending library, Clear the Air ATX.

Anti vaxx rhetoric is dangerous.
Not only does it promote the spread of contagious and preventable disease, but it radicalizes people.
The disinformation campaigns prey on people’s fears of death and disability. They turn that fear into anger.
Today a man opened fire at Emory University in Atlanta.
It appears he was targeting the CDC because he believed the COVID vaccines made him sick.
This is what propaganda does. And it’s only getting worse.

So, Covid-cautious peeps: how do you handle it when the people in your orbit want sympathy for getting sick •again•.
I just had this go-round again today with one of my coworkers, & I'm afraid I didn't handle it very well. (Granted, there were other factors in play that impaired my restraint. But even so....)

This Long Covid Awareness Day let us remember the millions who've been disabled by the virus.
The people who've been forgotten and left behind.
The folks who have to hide their diagnosis because of the stigma attached to it.
You think you don't know anyone with Long Covid?
I promise, you do:

A new study published today in eBioMedicine, part of the Lancet portfolio and one of the most rigorous journals in clinical medicine, provides what researchers describe as the clearest physical evidence yet of what long COVID is doing to the brain. Using the same imaging technology used to detect early Parkinson’s disease, a team led by Jeffrey Meyer at the University of Toronto scanned the brains of 24 long COVID patients and 24 healthy matched controls. They were not looking for general inflammation or nonspecific brain changes. They were measuring one specific thing: the health of the neurons that release dopamine.
What they found was a measurable, consistent, and symptom-correlated loss of dopamine nerve terminals averaging 18 percent across the long COVID group.
Looking for #CovidCautious folks in #SanFrancisco or the #BayArea.
Finally deciding to just...ask on the Fediverse, see if there's anyone online.
Suggestions also appreciated for other hashtags to use for this.
