“North Carolina Shelves Controversial Mask Ban Bill Amid Public Outcry”
“North Carolina's House Bill 237, which aimed to criminalize wearing masks in public, has been temporarily shelved due to widespread online protests and petitions.”
But only temporarily.
https://tr.im/politics/north-carolina-shelves-controversial-mask-ban-bill-amid-public-outcry
The North Carolina mask ban hasn’t been entered into law yet & already there’s a story of a woman being intentionally coughed on & harassed.
The man demanded she remove her mask, called her a Liberal and himself a Conservative and tried to tell her masks were illegal in public places. She explained she had stage 4 cancer and was immune compromise and he responded by purposefully coughing on her.
This is disgusting behaviour but make now mistake - lawmakers are effectively encouraging this type of harassment. Banning medical masks emboldens those who seek to harm high risk and disabled individuals. We are already seeing it.
It’s also fascinating that her attacker felt the need to call out his political affiliation (as well as make an assumption on hers).
I need people to understand masks aren’t political. Covid isn’t political. A virus is incapable of caring what side of the aisle you’re on - and a mask is a medical device to protect the health of the wearer (and others). This politicization of masks is mainly being driven by people who are angry about mandates at the height of the Covid pandemic - they consider the months they had to mask as the most egregious violation of their freedoms imaginable - and now they’re lashing out at those who remind them of that time in their lives. They don’t want to see masks (or disabled people) ever again.
Please keep pushing back. Speak out. Get loud. Let lawmakers know you won’t stand for bills that violate a person’s right to protect themselves and their health. The harassment will only get worse from here and we need to call out bad behaviour whenever it happens - and support each other through these difficult times.

I've been working on this for quite some time, and now here it is at last - my latest piece, on how the shock of the pandemic, and its mishandling, has for too long been exploited by right-wing interests: https://www.mediaactivist.com/recovering-from-shock/ #CovidIsNotOver #CovidIsAirborne #LongCovid #AntiFascism
Majorities can be wrong. And.. It's hard to tell ppl "hey your doctor is wrong for not masking, they're endangering you and their patients"-- without coming off as a conspiracy theorist. "Hey they're wrong when they say Covid is mild, because long Covid isn't. It's wrong your president isn't masking. It's wrong what most people you know are doing." So, Yeah... Majorities can be wrong, and small groups right. In fact that's usually how + change starts.
I finally got around to reading this and it's the perfect #covid #CovidIsNotOver #LongCOVID #COVIDisAirborne synopsis, #VioletAffleck blows me away again this year piece published at #Yale global health review , worth the read!!!! https://yaleglobalhealthreview.com/2025/05/18/a-chronically-ill-earth-covid-organizing-as-a-model-climate-response-in-los-angeles/
When I was 21…I was told I was likely infertile and that pregnancy could and probably would kill me. I was denied a tubal ligation and/or hysterectomy because I “might meet a man who wants kids”.
It was a horrifying look at how deep misogyny runs in medicine - and how little women are trusted to know their own bodies and make decisions for their health.
I eventually had the hysterectomy- but only once it became an emergency because I was bleeding to death and they couldn’t stop it. The surgery was more traumatizing and dangerous because I wasn’t afforded the time to adequately prep.
I’m grateful to have survived - and sharing my story in the hopes it helps other women feel less alone. I hope it challenges doctors and healthcare workers to think differently about how they treat women and realize that not ALL of us can become mothers (and not all of us WANT to either).
At the end of the day - a man wouldn’t have had these issues if he wanted a vasectomy. He would have been trusted to know his body. He wouldn’t have been treated like an incubator and I sincerely doubt many men are asked whether they’ve considered that they could meet their “dream woman” and she might be angry about their sterility.
There’s no stigma about the childless cat man.

I just had my first doctor tell me to ‘take off your mask so I can see your pretty face.’
I was there for an issue with my FEET. There was absolutely no reason for me to remove my mask.
I don’t know how much of this was misogyny and how much was related to pandemic politics (ie perhaps this doctor resents having to mask)… but I was incredibly uncomfortable with his remark.
I declined - as politely as humanly possible - and the whole tone of the appointment changed. I didn’t even get a diagnosis - I was told that the issue on my ankles was ‘not as ugly as I think’ ( I didn’t think it WAS ugly) and sent on my way.
I waited 18 months for this appointment - and the ‘issue’ is likely related to my vEDS and possibly severe. Multiple other doctors have expressed concern but said I had to wait for a specialist.
When patients are treated this way - it causes harm. It causes a distrust of the medical system. I can’t just ‘get a second opinion’ when the first one took 18 months.
When I’m less angry I may write an article about this - because patients (especially female presenting) deal with this crap FAR too often.
In the meantime - this experience underscores why we must always have an advocate with us in healthcare settings. It shouldn’t be this way - but it is.

Yesterday I wrote that disabled people are canaries in the coal mine for pandemics & climate change.
Today legendary director David Lynch has died after spending the last year in isolation trying to avoid Covid AND being evacuated from his home due to LA wildfires.
People were worried Lynch was retiring, he made it clear he was isolating due to Covid
Like many of us with disabilities, he was left behind. People craved his work but wouldn’t wear a mask so he could create safely. “You do you” policies pushed him out of the public eye.
Pandemics and climate change will sadly impact all of us eventually. Disabled people are just first.
We must work together to save the canaries:

Tomorrow will be a dark day for many.
For disabled, marginalized, LGBTQ+ folks & women. For anyone who still cares about others
The disability community saw this coming. It’s important we listen & understand that labelling people as expendable for 5 years leads nowhere good
Since November we’ve watched hate win over and over again.
We’ve witnessed the emboldening of those who think they’re superior to others.
We’ve seen an increase in misogyny, bigotry, ableism, racism & discrimination.
Disabled people begged the Left to pay attention. We begged you to keep masking, to push for clean air, to demand accountability from government.
We implored you to realize that our lives are not less important than your ability to go out for brunch.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of people on both sides of the aisle decided that mitigating COVID was “too hard.”
They accepted repeat infections as inevitable so they wouldn’t have to adapt their lives in any way.
They threw away people like me.
We let hate win. And now we’re going to see the consequences of that decision.
Disabled people weren’t surprised in November, we’ve been living in what feels like an alternate reality for years.
But I suspect others are about to feel our pain.
If you’re feeling scared or angry right now, know that you’re not alone. There’s a community standing with you.
I don’t know exactly what comes next, but I do know we have to keep up the fight.

Even if you think you’re the exception and you will never become chronically ill, wear a mask.
Even if you’re “young and otherwise healthy”, wear a mask.
Even if your last covid infection was “mild”, wear a mask.
Do it for those who may not be as lucky, and do it to protect your long term health

In the hospital for cardiac testing & there’s a mask mandate in place.
My chart says I’m high risk.
Tech comes in with mask under her nose.
Me: “Can you please pull up your mask I’m immune compromised.”
Her: Big sigh, pulls it up “You’ve got some serious Covid anxiety eh?”
Me: “not anxiety, I’m being rational. Colds have put me in the hospital.”
Her: Another big sigh
As I’m leaving I say: “It seems really quiet here today.”
Her: “Yeah half the staff are out sick. You’re actually lucky they didn’t cancel your appointment.”
Me: Internal shrieking

Tuberculosis outbreaks in Kansas, North Carolina & Ohio.
CDC aren’t permitted to update the public & people are not being advised of the risk or told to wear a mask.
There’s evidence that COVID causes immune system damage which could lead TB to reactivate.
A respirator prevents both Covid and TB.
Given we’re witnessing the dismantling of what was left of public health, there’s no better time to choose to wear a mask
You will protect yourself and your community. You will show much needed solidarity with vulnerable people who’ve never been able to stop masking.
You send a strong signal to the government that you aren’t willing to leave people behind.

Today is the last day to submit a comment to the FDA and tell them you want the right to access Covid vaccines!
The same people trying to restrict access are the ones who screamed about choice & autonomy when there were mandates.
Let people have choice and autonomy now.
Tell them you don’t agree with removing tools to stay healthy. To protect one another.
You can submit anonymously and it only takes a few minutes
“China noted a rise in outpatient cases from 7.5% to 16.2% and severe hospitalized cases from 3.3% to 6.3%”
The latest COVID variant is sweeping across Asia, causing “razor blade throat” and other concerning symptoms.
The US dismantles reporting, remove access to testing & may restrict vaccines.
Wear a well fitted respirator, it could save a life.
