Hugh Cook's excellent: Chronicles of an Age of Darkness, finally have new editions after languishing in copyright limbo for decades.
Cook plays with genre tropes, mixing adventure, satire and humor, elements that help these books transcend the limits that make so many other works of the 80s and 90s feel so dated.
The fan group that published them have made the effort to offer them at venues other than Amazon.
You can get them DRM free while supporting local book shops at BookShop.org:

An update on the Anthropic class action and settlement, for U.S. authors, from @victoriastrauss at the Writer Beware blog:

Yes, this is theft.
The good news (for artists) is that the liability can’t be washed away by running it through a software tool (a separate issue), and the artist can sue the person who published this.
Don’t be the person that publishes another’s work without authorization, not only because it’s a violation of the rights of the artist, and a breach of law, but because it’s wrong.

This stands on it's own and bears repeating often:
Today’s bans on DIY repairs of everything from cell phones to tractors grew out of Hollywood’s fear of videotaping.

"Dark Hours" is probably one of the first public smoking gun cases of a complete app (including the name) being copy/pasted by Claude Code and getting the "AI-enhanced" developer into trouble.
Godier did a good job in the aftermath by taking the app down and apologizing, but people really need to understand that "AI code" comes from somewhere and that somewhere is usually someone else's hard, copyrighted work.

A federal district court just ruled that training #AI tools on copyrighted texts is fair use.
https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/20/anthropics-landmark-1-5b-copyright-settlement-is-approved/
#Anthropic is in the clear for training #Claude on millions of books without permission or payment. However, it's liable for obtaining many of those books illegally, and its settlement of those claims (about $3k/title) was approved by the court.
So far this decision only applies in the Northern District of California. But it breaks the ice and will (as lawyers say) be "persuasive but not binding" in other districts.
so i have questions about #Debian:
1. are members ONLY developers?
2. only developers argued for/against #LLM #AI?
devs are the last people who should be involved in discussions about the ethics and legality of software. ie:
just reckoned, when a court recently decided you can't claim #copyright on #aislop, it didn't occur to me it means both closed and open copyright.
so, if using #LLMs trained on works stolen or added without consent removes any claims of #FLOSS: what is Debian now?
