New York City police have arrested more than 100 people protesting Israel’s war in Gaza on the campus of Columbia University. A student group called Columbia University Apartheid Divest set up an encampment on Wednesday to protest the school’s “continued financial investment in corporations that profit from Israeli apartheid.” University President Minouche Shafik warned demonstrators that they were not allowed to set up tents and occupy the grounds before police started forcibly removing them. But the president’s coming speech has sparked consternation from the graduating class. Some students see Biden using Morehouse as a political tool for Black votes in an election year, and others are considering ways to protest his Middle East policies without overshadowing the celebration for their families.
