Friday office garage EV charging at Kendall Square
charging
I feel like every EV charging station should have 10+ chargers. They don’t have to be all over the place. I just want to know there will be a probably a working and available charging port when I get there.
On the way back home from North Shore I thought I’d charge up for Newport trip tomorrow. Stopped at Assembly EA station. There were a swarm of KIA EVs waiting, even though the app shows 1 charger was available…
Pulled up EVgo app and found a very high power ChargePoint station nearby… at Ford Dealer (I use that dealer for my truck 🤣) 320kw - wow! I preconditioned the battery so it was nice and toasty and ready to accept maximum charge. So I drove there. And it worked so well. Though it’s very expensive - greedy car dealers!!
The charging curve was impressive on Taycan. Started at 40% SoC, pulling in 282kw maximum. Still pulling in over 200kw at 72%. This car is a beast.
The only one available charger at the Hyannis Electrify America station is a 150kw. However having 800V battery pack means my car can pull more than that from this one. It stayed 180-190kw all the way to about 75% SoC. I’m very pleased.
The car was like “No it’s not my fault to only charge at 180kw when the battery got nice and toasty on the way to the charger. Blame the charger.”
I wrote about my first EV road trip experience with planning, charging, range (mis)calculation and my adventure:

Gonna take that free juice (electrons) while I could (and convenient to do so)!
The charger I was using was marked under repair yesterday (two check-ins on PlugShare said it couldn’t be activated)
It came back online today. And worked well with Plug & Charge.
The CC reader seemed to be down though
Electrify America at Plymouth … one charger is down shown in the app… and one more shows available but actually down (won’t activate) and the 350kw that I waited 10 mins for is reduced to about 170kw
I’m glad my car tells me the charging power is limited by the charging station……
I'm a data freak so here's the charging stats during about 4 months of owning the EV.
Here's the total energy delivered for each charging network. Home charge of course comes first.
Wonderful FLO Ultra charger in Montpelier VT!
Full house when we arrived, but only waited 1 minute before the Rivian finished and left.
Very snappy and responsive touchscreen. FLO RFID card payment went through very smoothly and quickly. And it started charging in no time.
Maximum 160kw though. But the spec of the charger says it can support 320kw if only 1 car is charging and it is dynamically power shared between the two plugs. But I’m not sure if it’s the case at this one.
Beautiful view with mountains and VT state house in the background. Close to downtown and many options for food, coffee and shopping. Also right next to a grocery store.

Needed to make a quick charging stop in Eastham because I forgot to charge to 100% before leaving for Provincetown, and the extra drag from the bike rack made the efficiency worse. Obviously the bike design is not optimized for the aerodynamic when it's sideways 😜
I could charge near Ptown long enough so I can make it home, but 1) Ptown's DC charger is a Tesla supercharger, as much as I don't want give money to Musk, it is also not 800V output, meaning the Taycan only takes around 140-150kw, which is not so much different from the 120kw I can get from this ChargePoint. 2) as I don't drive much, I need to take advantage of the Electrify America free charging when I have the opportunity.
So a quick 9 mins charge from 11% to 22% and we got on the way to the Electrify America in Hyannis. Arrived with 13% SoC and got the free juice to 85%.

Recent EV charging drama...
We spontaneously decided to go antiquing in Worcester which is about 1 hour away. With 30% SoC we'd just be able to make it home with 0% but I didn't want to risk that. So I decided to charge around Worcester on the way back.
First choice is EA in Northborough, since it's free for me. It has an 85% charge limit, so turnover should be fast. However there were 3 cars waiting when we arrived. I didn't want to wait, and Josh found a Ford Charger across the street at a dealer. I haven't used a Ford one before, so we decided to give it a try.
We saw one right away in front of the building, but it was turned off. I looked around and noticed another one across the parking lot, but it turned out to be an outdated charger which was also turned off, and at a Lincoln dealer. As we were super disappointed and leaving, I saw one at the back of the service department and it was on! It only accepts payment through Ford Charge (when you have a Ford EV) or Shell app. I haven't used the shell app for so long that I had to reset my password... But eventually everything worked fine. Reached 224kw in no time, which is not bad for a 240kw charger. We only charged for 8 mins to get us home. It's actually cheaper than the EA too.
And loved that it gave stats for Nerds!!
