Probably the best piece I've ever made.

Purmerend Pottery
My Asian interests were already there , lightening up thanks Kdrama since 2009.
Started to volunteer in Purmerends Museum, 20 kl north of Amsterdam in 2019.
A precious collection of pottery made between 1895 - 1907. Exported to London, from there spreading all over the Commonwealth.
Often talks with visitors about Asia ' s influence on Europe in that period.

My last #selfie for the algorithm before I deleted IG last weekend. Goodbye after 12 yrs + 50k followers 👋🏾 I couldn’t have done it if I hadn’t gained some traction here, so thank you for following.
I grew up in #punkrock and #anarchist organizing, so moving to #NonCorporate and #decentralized social media feels full circle. I want my #pottery to be part of a future of thought that represents progress and liberation.

Working on a pair of #compost crocks (among other things) to hopefully be fired by the end of the month. We’ve outgrown our old one so one of these will be the replacement. They each hold somewhere around a gallon/4L. The double handles make them easy to carry & dump, and the lids fit snuggly. They’re sturdy pieces of functional ware, which also serve as decorative objects when not in use. I’m excited to see them glazed. #beautility #functionalpottery #gardening #permaculture #ceramics #pottery
I am a ceramic artist who enjoys making little ceramic critters. I'm most inspired by forest animals, but I love pretty much all kinds of animals. If I had all the money in the world, I would open a wildlife sanctuary in the woods. But right now I'm content to create my own little menagerie of cute things. I'm hoping to become a part of a supportive online community of other artists, art lovers, and friends. Thanks for reading!

Here's a ceramic hedgehog, fierce defender of whatever you store inside its belly. I'm new to this community and I'm a bit like this hedgehog. Since certain social media platforms are showing their true colors, I'm backing off and trying to find a safe place to settle, to share creative stuff, knowledge and fun without generating profit for scary billionaires. This might just be that place but I have no idea how it works yet. cheers!

Right now, I'm working on an article that shares tips about making terra sigillata (a refined decorating slip) from #wildclay, which builds off of some older writing I've done. Here is a blog post from last year about finding and foraging clay in nature.

Kaori Kurihara Exhibition "Ceramique Botanique"
Japanese artist Kaori Kurihara sculpts fanciful ceramic sculptures of lusciously textured exotic fruits and vegetation, both real and imagined. Her exquisite pieces are heavily inspired by the plant world, pungent odor and distinct taste.

The black on this mug comes from terra sigillata made from a ball of manganese-rich New Mexico clay my friend gave me. After they’re done firing, I lightly sand the exterior of each mug with a fine-grain sandpaper. The handles become smooth and soft to the touch.

Since I wiped my IG, there’s no way for people to see my progress over the years. I’m thinking about adding a gallery of past work to my website to remedy this. 1st photo shows work from 2017, 2nd photo shows work from 2024.
I started making #pottery in 2013 at age 34. I knew nothing of handmade #ceramics or the history behind it and had to self-educate. After over a decade studying historical pottery & natural materials, my pieces have become living cultural artifacts. #alttext for details.
It takes me at least a couple of hours to decorate a pot this size. I brush three layers of terra sigillata into each section, alternating the different types of clay in a rhythmic symmetry. Then I’ll bisque fire the pot, apply glaze and fire one last time. I haven’t made as much progress this week as I would have liked so I may end up working a bit this weekend, which is something I try to avoid. Have a good weekend, everyone.

New blog post: I started sharing images & info from out-of-print book #NigerianPottery which contains photos of pots I haven't seen anywhere online, particularly with this level of regional detail.
I’m hoping access to such visual archives might inform contemporary practice – both for those reconnecting with heritage and anyone invested in global ceramic histories. Will be adding to this gradually as I work through the material.
New batch of ollas coming down the pipelines. The repetition of creating these simple forms is grounding, calming. If you haven’t seen my previous posts on these #SustainableGardening tools, check #OllasByOsa.

I started this #collective for Black ceramic #artists in 2021 as a response to the murder of #GeorgeFloyd and the resulting, temporary Black business boom of 2020. Hearing predominantly white orgs confess that they were still “listening & learning” made me realize with renewed urgency how much we need our own resources & institutions.
The Kaabo Award sale, on 5/25 (the anniversary of Floyd’s death) is our biggest fundraiser of the year.
I’m working on completing a batch of ollas before I leave for the #ceramics symposium in Virginia next week. We’re finally having days of consecutive rain, marking the beginning of storm season and hopefully the end of our two-year drought. That means I get to give the ollas in my garden a rest for the time being while other regions, particularly out West, move into a dry season during which ollas would be a helpful, sustainable irrigation solution. #OllasByOsa #pottery #gardening

1. Finally, my fifth attempt at a fully functional teapot was a success!! It pours beautifully and looks super cute. (photo attached)
2. Hosted my cousins from Pittsburgh overnight while they were on their way to Chicago. My daughter came in from Detroit for the mini family reunion. Everybody ate VERY well!
3. My dog was very charming throughout the visit and loved meeting new people (the cousins). They were smitten with her.
I wasn't sure they'd include my gripes about Instagram and my shoutout to the Fediverse, but they did! Otherwise, it's about the usual: #pottery, my #punkrock roots, combining #African & #Indigenous ceramics legacies with Western studio #ceramics, etc.
I was invited to make pieces for an upcoming ewer show. The concept was inspired by the gallery owner’s experience beginning to #garden with his family, enjoying the bounty daily, and using #handmade ewers to drizzle olive oil and vinegar over fresh veggies. I love making pots that pour, so the prompt was a welcome challenge, allowing me to combine multiple elements that I’ve practiced over the years. How would you use these pots?
