Found out I needed to install mozilla certs for pkgin to work. Installed those, now running pkgin update

Today is a special day! It is the BSD Cafe's birthday!

Exactly three years ago today, I was rather timidly announcing this project to the world. It was an idea that had already been in my mind for some time, but had not yet become reality.

Three years later, I am proud to say that the BSD Cafe is sailing at full speed towards the uncertain horizons of the modern world.

We are here to talk about BSD, Open Source, projects, conferences, freedom, pizza and tiramisu, but above all about passions, interests, discoveries and knowledge. We are here among friends who share interests and passions, without geography or borders, apart from those defined by mutual respect.

Your Barista is more energised than ever.

During the past year, he had to retire one of the services, BlendIT, our Lemmy instance, but he also added several new ones: Journal, based on WordPress, Billboard, running on NodeBB, the Delta Chat relay, and more.

He also had to withdraw from BSDCan, with enormous regret, but he is now ready for EuroBSDCon. And for other new things that will gradually follow.

For example, here is a small preview: I have been experimenting with MeshCore.

My dream? One or more BSD Cafe services that do not use the Internet at all. I already have a few ideas, so I shall not disclose anything more for now 😉

And I will never grow tired of repeating that the BSD Cafe is a success because of you.

I am just the Barista, but a place like this is nothing without the friends sitting at the bar. And the friends of this bar are wonderful people who, every day, help make my days calmer, happier and more interesting.

So thank you for these three years, and thank you for being here.

We shall continue sailing together towards the future, with smiles on our faces and passion in our hearts.

I had to replace #FreeBSD with #Linux on my old laptop at home serving as a streaming server for movies mainly. The only reason is low internet speed. The laptop came with an Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 Plus Bluetooth wireless card, both the iwn and iwlwifi successfully bring it up and connect. However, neither driver worked well enough to achieve as fast as 1M/s speen when downloading large files. After installing #Debian downloading speed easily goes up to as 2M/s when downlading the same large files.

I accidentally came across this #MediaTek #MT7601U #WiFi driver for #NetBSD on GitHub: https://github.com/MakwanaVihas/gsoc_2k22 but it seems long abandoned. I wonder if someone knows how to use it. I actually have such a USB WiFi dodge, and since the #iwm driver works on and off for my Intel 8260 card on NetBSD I think I can give this a try maybe.

My new stance: if your broken ass software doesn't compile and run on #OpenBSD or another #BSD, then go back and re-evaluate your code. Don't just target Linux, aim for portability! It'll help your code.

I've been trying to explore the world outside GNU/Linux (or, as I've recently taken to calling it, "Sexual predator userspace plus egotistical botlicker kernel"). Naturally, the first stop on this road is the fragmented world of #BSD.

I won't lie, the experience is very reminiscent of running Linux in the 1990s: hardware support is dicey at best, it's very rare to find commercial software that will run on it, and the guiding philosophy seems to be that user-friendliness is an undesirable quality that will only result in The Wrong People using your software. Nevertheless, I'm committed to giving it a fair trial.

So far my favorite variant is #OpenBSD, especially for servers. I like the fact that it's secure by default, rather than being a hacker's dream out of the box that you then have to figure out how to secure. But I have questions.

- One of the #FreeBSD features I've heard touted a lot is "jails," which I gather means "like Docker but harder to use". But this doesn't seem to be a feature in OpenBSD. Is there something equivalent in the OpenBSD world, perhaps under another name?

- The only *BSD that I know for sure has banned LLM contributions is #NetBSD. What, if any, are the LLM policies of OpenBSD and FreeBSD?

- Has anybody tried audio production in BSD? What's the experience like? It took years for Linux to get to the point where you could more or less do serious audio work, and I hate to think of regressing back to "if you buy this one particular sound card they stopped making in 1998 and recompile the kernel with a dodgy patch someone posted to USENET you can maybe kind of play a .WAV file".

(I have been informed by an anonymous source that "BSD jails" are in fact what they put you in if you use the software without a valid BSD license. I am not sure this is correct.)

Still no good news with the freshly out #NetBSD 11.0 RELEASE. S3 suspend woke up with dead WiFi (Intel 8265, iwm driver), in addition to keyboard and touchpad as before on my #ThinkPad T470s. So basically dead machine and no way to reset unless long press power button for a hard reboot. Desktop usability needs more love.

Now I have to config automount for external disk/USB keys and I need to find a way to encrypt my external disk and use it both in GNU\Linux and NetBSD.

GDC (I never tried it on Linux and I didn't find anything online)?
ZFS? Anyone have an idea?

I know I can use OpenSSL or GPG but I think it's better and more confortable to encrypt the full drive...

P.S. I love NetBSD but pkgin is really slow 😅 (It's probably not a problem with pkgin, but rather my Wi-Fi card.)

I did not even realize but now my #FreeBSD has been running 15.1-RELEASE-p2, it simply upgrade from 15.1-RELEASE-p1 during regular pkg upg runs. I guess that it something impressive achieved by the new pkgbase tool. It feels like running a rolling-release #Linux distro now.

Anyone had experience installing the shod window manager on #FreeBSD ? Saw it yesterday from a screenshot someone shared in a reddit commend and the 'grouping' feature caught my eye. Unfortunately it is not in #ports and I failed to compile myself even after installing a few dependencies I could find. The repo did not mention a lot on how to install either.

Toying around with the #shod window manager on #FreeBSD. It feels so magic when you can group different application windows together as tabs, as shown in my screenshot where two #xterm windows and a #Firefox share the same window frame as three separate tabs. This is also what I found fascinating about #pekwm and #HaikuOS. #Fluxbox also has something similar I think. And again thanks #ZFS boot environments, I cannot say this enough.

2 days of running #OpenBSD as a daily driver has been smooth as silk. I fixed the touchpad issue on my thinkpad and getting a linux VM setup for my web dev build and deploys was way easier than FreeBSD.

I am absolutely loving this operating system. it's solid, doesn't eat resources, and is simply a joy to use. I'm now seriously considering nuking my nixos partition and just putting debian or bazzite on it for only gaming.

In case you lack of GPU acceleration on GhostBSD 25 and FreeBSD 15 using Linuxulator, it is caused by a bug in that component where it does not expose correctly the video cards to the system.
There is this workaround, but has some lines that have to be fixed, depending where you want install the script, before it can work.
