This Place Kills Me by Mariko Tamaki and Nicole Goux (Illustrator) (2025) is similar to Mall Goth by Kate Leth (2023). Both graphic novels involve young women judged by their peers and being taken advantage of by adults in positions of trust.

by Helen Garner.
The author shadows her grandson's under-16 Aussie Rules team for a season. A glimpse from the boundary line of boys on the cusp on manhood, the solidarity of teammates, the strange spiritual appeal of sport. Wonderfully written & absorbing, but it's still just footy and Melburnians are weird.

I am re-reading one of my favorite #books: "The Snow Leopard" by Peter Matthiessen. It is a #travel book set in 1973 in #Nepal as the author accompanies a #science expedition into the #Himalayas. It is a book about #nature and a #Buddhist introspection on grief and change.
The cool thing is that I am #reading the chapters on the day they were set. A really nice experience if you have never read such a book like that before.
I’m only 7 followers away from the 25 they recommend you have to launch!

Every nine years, people disappear into a house which otherwise can't be found. The author's usual layering of stories across different time periods gradually reveals the truth, though it's not particularly clever this time around. Dark arts & illusions, bit creepy, not really my thing.

#GardnerDozois 's yearly #SciFi collections are slowly taking over my bookshelf. This one from 1991 starts extremely strongly with Nancy Kress's 'Beggars in Spain', which I believe she later reworked into her most well known novel. She really is the best writer in SF at handling themes of class and wealth inequality I think. Other highlights are by Alexander Jablokov, Geoffrey A. Landis, Rick Shelley, and two Greg Egan stories I already own in his Axiomatic collection. #Bookstodon @bookstodon

Deadly Crush by Maddie Day and Linda Jones (Narrator) (2024) is the second Cece Barton mystery, or third if you count the short story that launched the series. Cece hired the wrong electrician to redo the lights in Vino y Vida something she realizes as Karl takes too long to complete his work and in the rude way he treats his assistant, Ian.

The Saxons threaten to overrun Briton; a search for a legendary artifact to bring back the Old Gods; a little blissful romance; Lancelot is a backstabbing, cowardly bastard; oaths, what are they good for? A touch more magic than in the first book, but just as hard, dirty & cynical.

In 1960s Mississippi, white women and the black maids they employ navigate the upheaval of the civil rights movement. The contrast of ingrained racism and the deep emotional integration of black women into white family life is astounding. Potential for deep analysis, but you can also just enjoy the story.

I was thinking of @Forestofglory and a conversation we had a while back about cultural histories of the Tang. It made me remember this lesser known one.
This book is a cultural history of the city of Chang'An through the collected tales of failed examinees, women and foreigners. Also one of the books that sent me on the rabbit hole of foreigners and intercultural marriage in Tang China

While the hero of the series is lost in the Nowhere, her fellow pilots get on with being awesome and taking the fight to the oppressors. Decent YA fare with lots of dogfights, light humour and a little romance. The hyperslugs are adorable.
