I was looking for a horror anthology, unfortunately this didn't hit right. It's more of a queer exploration of monsters which worked in some stories and didn't in others. https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/fed230ed-6d74-41ef-98c6-577c74f3ce36 @bookstodon #bookstodon #bookreview

1
before this war
the cats were thoughtful and meek
2
before that winter
the house dogs went into packs
3
after this war
there will be dogs
who changed two or three names
4
after that winter
there will be cats who have visited several countries
and returned to strange homes

Deadly Night Shade by Keirston Harding is an interesting read. Dariel Matador is attempting to get closer to his choice of victims, Serena Kyle. His obsession with her is absolutely dark.

I've finished: Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson
It was hard watching Tantan struggle to come to terms with what was done to her.
It was interesting to see how the midnight robber helps her cope.
Add some wonderful aliens to contrast the limitless stupidity of the humans and you get a challenging and compelling mix of SF&F.

Five stars:
The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery (2015) is part memoir and part biology book, all centered on the octopuses the author met during her research for the book. The four main ones are Athena, Octavia, Kali and Karma, who lived at the New England Aquarium in Boston.

I've finished: Foreigner by C. J. Cherryh
Until lately I was unaware of C. J. Cherryh's work. She is one of those authors I missed out on before the internet made buying books internationally practical.
So you could say I finally popped my cherry :^).
Foreigner is dated in some ways but as usual it is the women authors that do better over time as they tend to deal with more progressive ideas.
Cherryh breaks expectations as she makes the human colony the threatened side in a fragile peace accord with the local aliens.
Bren Cameron is the Paidhi, a human ambassador to the Atevi.
While capable, Bren isn't a competence porn protagonist. He is out of his depth for most of the novel and only comes through by the skin of his teeth.
We follow Bren's account of events, keeping us confused until things start to come together.
I understand things are clearer in the subsequent novels. I was glad to experience Foreigner without any spoilers.

I have the new K.J. Charles but I've been having such picky, turned off reactions to every book I've read lately, I'm scared to try it.
Do you want to hear a story about a robot caregiver and his cancer-stricken owner? My audiobook narrator said this story made him cry “A LOT.”

Five stars:
This Place Kills Me by Mariko Tamaki and Nicole Goux (Illustrator) (2025) is similar to Mall Goth by Kate Leth (2023). Both graphic novels involve young women judged by their peers and being taken advantage of by adults in positions of trust.
There's no danger of my 2 entries for #MurderEveryMonday this week not qualifying: one from my favourite GAP(ublisher), Dean Street Press and one from my favourite GAQ, Margery Allingham

finished reading The Season 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
by Helen Garner.
The author shadows her grandson's under-16 Aussie Rules team for a season. A glimpse from the boundary line of boys on the cusp on manhood, the solidarity of teammates, the strange spiritual appeal of sport. Wonderfully written & absorbing, but it's still just footy and Melburnians are weird.

Dandadan (ダンダダン), Volume 1 by Yukinobu Tatsu (2021) (November 2025) is the start of a 22 (as of writing this review) volume manga series that also has an anime adaptation. I read volume in in translation, both in English and German.
This introductory volume brings together Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura (nicknamed Okarun). They're both high school students. She knows spirits. He knows UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena). When they each call bullshit on the other's special interests / knowledge, they end up facing both E.T.s and spirits.

I am re-reading one of my favorite #books: "The Snow Leopard" by Peter Matthiessen. It is a #travel book set in 1973 in #Nepal as the author accompanies a #science expedition into the #Himalayas. It is a book about #nature and a #Buddhist introspection on grief and change.
The cool thing is that I am #reading the chapters on the day they were set. A really nice experience if you have never read such a book like that before.
