What were your favourite reads for the year? I finished 69 books in 2025, and these are 4 of my faves: Ursula Le Guin's trippy, wonderful homage to her friend Philip K. Dick; the grimy, nasty vampire story that set the template for the zombie movie genre; the hilariously fun heists of the early 20th century gentleman burglar Arsène Lupin; and Adrian Tchaikovsky's millennia-spanning story of humans - and spiders! - in space. #Bookstodon @bookstodon #BooksOfTheYear

Two books I loved, part 1:
Gliff - Ali Smith
A fable about survival in a totalitarian surveillance state. A reflection on childhood, siblinghood, and the cost and worth of kindness. A dance with language and memory. I was torn between the impulse to read it all in one sitting and the urge to savor every single sentence.
Have people made their reading lists for the #TransRightsReadathon ? I'm such a mood reader I'm just collecting ideas, but I'm thinking about Womens Hotel by Daniel Lavery and maybe something by Sarah Gailey.
finished reading Before the Coffee Gets Cold 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
by Toshikazu Kawaguchi.
In a particular seat in an otherwise unremarkable cafe, it is possible to travel through time. Despite stringent limitations, the customers and workers nonetheless find solace from the travails of life. Its a pleasing enough community of everyday people, but nothing special.

Five stars:
The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass (2023) is about how a Little Free Library is the spark a town needs to finally rebuild it's library. This being a Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass novel, the path from inciting event to goal is a ponderous one filled with unusual characters and a ton of magical realism.

Five stars:
Death by Java by Alex Erickson and Melissa Moran (Narrator) is the 14th book in the Bookstore Cafe mystery series. Krissy and Paul are visiting her father and stepmother over the summer. Krissy gets caught up in helping a former high school bully get her coffeeshop up to snuff.

If you're like me and have multiple editions of a book (say in different languages) and want to shelve them separately on Goodreads, here is how:
But even then I think TV and movies based on books are often better than a lot of other TV or movie writing, so perhaps it's not all bad? 🤔😁

This week's #NewBooks at the library: Some more unusual acquisitions from 2025.
- I purchased the last copy of the definitive retrospective on the #palaeoart of Zdenek #Burian from Albatros Media. Volume 3 focuses on his artwork of prehistoric humans. All these books are written in Czech, but the artwork is just lavish, and I'm a sucker for period palaeoart.
- I found a second-hand copy of the reissue of #AlexanderVonHumboldt's Views of Nature, released by the University of Chicago Press.
- #Spookslot - 44 jaar te gast bij de geesten, a Dutch book I hunted down via a friend, which was released to commemorate the closure of one of the most beloved attractions, Het Spookslot (a haunted house), in De #Efteling, a well-known Dutch amusement park I used to go to quite often as a child. I know they have completely rebuilt it into a new ride now with nods to the classic panoramic show, but I haven't visited it yet.

finished reading Radical Markets: Uprooting Capitalism and Democracy for a Just Society 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
by Eric Posner & Glen Weyl.
Proposes a number of dramatic reforms to foundational institutions: including property, voting & migration. A perennial auction of property would result in shared public ownership funding a basic income and ensuring more efficient use of capital - this one challenged my deep set conception of ownership & control. Quadratic voting would enable citizens to give more democratic weight to issues of more concern to them - fantastic, we should do this! Would love to see these ideas get consideration and trial runs. We desperately need more creative thinking along these lines. No consideration given to environmental limits.

finished reading The Shadow of the Wind 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.
A rare book sets a teenage boy on a path of mystery, love & revenge. This was nearly great, with an intriguing setup, smooth prose, vibrant characters and an evocative sense of time & place (mid-century Barcelona). But it ran out of steam with repetitive storytelling and too much exposition. And nearly all the men were incorrigible womanisers.

Did anyone else try out the Apple Voice Technology offered for free by Draft2Digital to produce audiobooks? I was amazed at how terrible and primitive the Apple Voice Technology actually is, considering what Apple is. Here's one clue about how terrible the technology is: I wrote a book in 2023 under the pen name N.J. Edwards. The computer-generated male voice introduced the audiobook this way: "This is an audiobook by author New Jersey Edwards. Granted, New Jersey Edwards is a fantastic pen name. I wish I'd thought of it. But that is not the author's name on the front of my book. The audiobook of my novel BEER POUR is so atrocious that there's actual computer code jibberish spoken in the middle of a dialogue scene. I could go on and on about all the flaws, but there's not enough room here. Go back to the drawing board, Apple. #Apple #audiobook #books #bookstodon #mastodon #book #novel #novel #voice #tech #technology #author #NewJersey #draft2digital #D2D #computergenerated #computer #introduction #intro #introductions #scribesAndMakers #writing #writersCoffeeClub #writer #publishing #MyWork #writersOfMastodon #writers #writersLife #indieAuthor #author #authors #audio #audiofiction #startup

Four stars:
The Time Hop Coffee Shop by Phaedra Patrick (2025) isn't really a time travel or even time loop story. Instead it's more of an isekai involving coffee. Greta Perks has regrets about how her post Maple Gold Coffee commercial career has gone, in that it has tanked. Her home life isn't going well either and she wants more than anything to relive those glory days.

finished reading The Strangest Criminals: A Funny and Heartwarming Cosy Fantasy Mystery About Crime, Magic, and Found Family 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑
by Blake Polden.
In a world where the Occult lives along side the Ordinary, a magical mafia family turns bad. Has potential, with some fresh creativity, but the writing is too choppy & disrupted.
