<p>British artist, writer, poet, playwright, novelist, painter, designer of lamps, and bohemian Mina Loy died <a href="/tags/otd/" rel="tag">#OTD</a> in 1966.</p><p>Loy's poetry is known for its non-traditional structure, free verse, and exploration of the female experience, such as Lunar Baedecker (1923). In 1914, while living in an expatriate community in Florence, Italy, Loy wrote her Feminist Manifesto. Longtime NBC News reporter Char Adams writes a deeply compelling and rigorously reported history of Black political movements told through the lens of Black-owned bookstores, which have been centers for organizing from abolition to the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter.

In Black-Owned, Char Adams celebrates the living history of Black bookstores. Packed with stories of activism, espionage, violence, community, and perseverance, Black-Owned starts with the first Black-owned bookstore, which an abolitionist opened in New York in 1834, and after the bookshop’s violent demise, Black book-lovers carried on its cause. In the twentieth century, civil rights and Black Power activists started a Black bookstore boom nationwide. Malcolm X gave speeches in front of the National Memorial African Book Store in Harlem—a place dubbed “Speakers’ Corner”—and later, Black bookstores became targets of FBI agents, police, and racist vigilantes. Still, stores continued to fuel Black political movements.

Amid these struggles, bookshops were also places of celebration: Eartha Kitt and Langston Hughes held autograph parties at their local Black-owned bookstores. Maya Angelou became the face of National Black Bookstore Week. And today a new generation of Black activists is joining the radical bookstore tradition, with rapper Noname opening her Radical Hood Library in Los Angeles and several stores making national headlines when they were overwhelmed with demand in the Black

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo was disappointing

<p>With the release of the Netflix series adapting Bardugo’s Grishaverse (side note, I kinda hate “verse” terms) to the screen, I had been reading a lot of praise for the world and the written series, in particular the Six of Crows duology. Sure enough, popular review sites seem to back that hype up. It is very well reviewed.</p><p>After trudging my way through the Shadow & Bone trilogy, I thought I would finally get to the payoff: Six of Crows, pretty much universally praised fantasy heist book with a great cast of characters. What’s not to love?</p><p>Well… A lot, I found out. I acknowledge that I’m probably just not the right audience for this, I guess. I know it’s targeted at YA, but the praise is so universal, even my like-aged fantasy reading nerd friends recommended it. But it fell so short of expectations for me.</p><p>Now, I didn’t hate it. I’ve read worse. And there’s definitely things I liked about the book, and Bardugo’s world. But not nearly enough to like as much as everyone else seems to.</p><p>I constantly found it very difficult to believe, even in a world of fantastical magic, that a group of 15 to 18 year olds had the breadth and depth of skills and knowledge the main cast do. And found myself constantly asking in the second half of the book how this palace could possibly be described as impregnable as it had been when the crew seemed to pretty much have the run of the place.</p><p>The timings of the flashbacks were jarring to me, the romances were shallow and unbelievable, and for probably half of the chapters I asked myself, “did we really need to change character POVs for this?”</p><p>I ultimately landed on a 2.75/5 - still above average, but a far cry from the consensus.
