"American Massacre: The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, September 1857" by Sally Denton. My rating: 5 out of 5 stars. Published in 2007.
Book description: In September 1857, a wagon train passing through Utah was attacked. Approximately 140 people were slaughtered; only 17 children under the age of eight were spared. This incident in an open field called Mountain Meadows has ever since been the focus of passionate discussion. Is it possible that official Mormon dignitaries were responsible for the massacre? Sally Denton makes a fiercely convincing argument that they were.
This massacre is one I did not read about in the history books, probably because the Norman church wanted it buried. The detail, gleaned from historical records, is astounding and also very graphic.

"They’re afraid because we exist, she says. There’s nothing we did to provoke their fear, other than exist. There’s nothing we can do to earn their approval, except stop existing—so we can either die like they want, or laugh at their cowardice and go on with our lives."

"The President and the Assassin: McKinley, Terror, and Empire at the Dawn of the American Century" by Scott Miller. My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Published in 2011.
Book description: In 1901, as America tallied its gains from a period of unprecedented imperial expansion, an assassin’s bullet shattered the nation’s confidence. The shocking murder of President William McKinley threw into stark relief the emerging new world order of what would come to be known as the American Century. The President and the Assassin is the story of the momentous years leading up to that event, and of the very different paths that brought together two of the most compelling figures of the era: President William McKinley and Leon Czolgosz, the anarchist who murdered him.
Not only was this book a well told story, but it also brought into clear focus much not detailed in history textbooks I experienced.

I've always loved reading but for the past 10/15+ years I just mostly... Haven't read.
I gave Dad a novel a couple of months ago and after he read it he brought it back to me so I could read it.
I read it about a month ago and that kick started me reading again. I've read 10 novels in the last two weeks.
Talking to Dad today, he told me that the book I had given him made him rediscover his love of reading, and in the last two weeks he's also read a dozen novels.
New review: A potent mixture of cartoons and palaeontology, these giftable hardbacks show that humour can be an important component of science communication.

I wanted to read a good nonfiction book, this year, around the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, to remember the people who were killed. So, this morning, I started reading "Fall and Rise" by Mitchell Zuckoff. Published in 2019. It is an excellent read. I especially like it because it is a chronology of events as to what people on the ground and people in the air did that day.

Six years ago, I read "The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11" by Garrett M. Graff. That is also an excellent book.
Boy, Y'all weren't kidding when you said that The Sparrow was brilliant written, but would also destroy me.
Is the sequel equally devastating?
Gods damnit! Am thinking I will have to delete one of my manuscripts because it was very close to this, even though mine is gay and disability first. I don't mind because I have a whole litany of ideas and romance plots I want to do, but I would recommend checking this one out because it's really fun! https://share.libbyapp.com/title/11881316 #Books #Bookstodon @bookstodon

With the change/rebrand to the Kindle Unlimited now Plus program, I see that subscribers can now drown in AI audiobooks as well as AI ebooks. Yay?
The one upside of Amazon being the dominant party in this market is that Kobo Plus (who had that name first, just saying) is relatively unscathed by slop so far.

In case you needed to dislike JK Rowling even more:
"Neil Blair established High Line Publishing Studio to help Jewish and Israeli literary figures who are being 'shunned.' Blair represents such leading literary lights as JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series."
