📚 The Sideways Life of Denny Voss by: Holly Kennedy
On the surface, Denny Voss's life in rural Minnesota is a quiet one. At thirty years old, he lives at home with his elderly mother and his beloved blind and deaf Saint Bernard, George. He cleans up roadkill to help pay the bills. Though his prospects are limited by a developmental delay--the re...

I believe the solution for all this Amazon Kindle shenanigan is not about buying a Kobo. It’s about how we do not allow corporations to determine how we protest. Responsible consumption combined with political and social activism is a more sustainable way to challenge corporate power.
switching from one corporation to another isn't rebellion, it's what capitalism does what it does best, which is selling us the idea of rebellion
It’s called “The Last Spark”. The setting is a city called Umbra, choked by a thick fog called The Drowse—where merchants don’t open their stalls, soldiers don’t drill, and even the king preaches stillness as wisdom. No magic. No chosen-one tropes. Just a protagonist who realises that the fog isn’t a curse—it’s collective hesitation. He defeats it not with a sword, but with the raw algebra of moving when everyone else stays still.
What hit me hardest wasn’t the action. It was the Practical Log at the end—five fill‑in‑the‑blank exercises that force you to translate his struggles into your own morning routine.
Here’s my genuine question for this community:
When you catch yourself stuck in that “I’ll do it tomorrow” cycle—what single, physical action do you take to break the trance?
(For me, it’s putting my phone in another room before I sleep. It sounds trivial, but it rewires the first hour of my day.)
If you’re curious, the author offers a free preview on the product page so you can read the first two chapters before buying anything. No pressure—just sharing a find that actually moved me.

Would love to hear your personal “fog‑breakers” below.
What do you do when your willpower is fogged by the "illusion of later"?

The Letters of Heloise: Love, Learning, and Life as a Medieval Woman
Heloise’s letters reveal a medieval woman caught between enduring love, religious duty, and the expectations of her age. Andrea Maraschi explores how they also showcase her remarkable learning and her willingness to express thoughts and emotions rarely preserved in medieval women’s writing.

A federal district court just ruled that training #AI tools on copyrighted texts is fair use.
https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/20/anthropics-landmark-1-5b-copyright-settlement-is-approved/
#Anthropic is in the clear for training #Claude on millions of books without permission or payment. However, it's liable for obtaining many of those books illegally, and its settlement of those claims (about $3k/title) was approved by the court.
So far this decision only applies in the Northern District of California. But it breaks the ice and will (as lawyers say) be "persuasive but not binding" in other districts.

"Burning the Books: A History of the Deliberate Destruction of Knowledge" by Richard Ovenden. My rating:5 out of 5 stars. Published in 2020.
Book description: The director of the Bodleian Libraries at Oxford narrates the global history of the willful destruction—and surprising survival—of recorded knowledge over the past three millennia. Libraries and archives have been attacked since ancient times but have been especially threatened in the modern era. Burning the Books recounts the history that brought us to this point.
There is so much information contained in these pages, past, present and future. Books and libraries are fighting a battle for their very lives. I highly recommend this book.

📚 Navola by: Paolo Bacigalupi
In the bustling city-state of Navola, business is power, and power is everything. For generations, the di Regulai family has nurtured their merchant-banking empire. Though they claim not to be political, their staggering wealth buys cities and topples kingdoms, and no one obstructs them twice.
