Incomplete manuscript of the Dhammapada in Gandhari and in Kharosthi characters. It may have been copied between the end of the 1st century CE and the end of the 3rd century CE, which makes it the one of the oldest known Indian language documents.

Its sheets, in birch bark, reinforced in the direction of the height by a string sewn on each side, are about 20 cm wide. Here fragmentary, originally at least 1.23 m long, they were, after reading, folded in on themselves, thus forming notebooks about 20 cm long and 4 to 5 cm thick. This is a fanciful portrait of one "Apollonius" - a name shared by several illustrious ancient Greek men. Among those, most prominent are (1) the epic poet, Apollonius of Rhodes (3rd century BCE); (2) the mathematician, Apollonius of Perga (2nd century BCE); (3) the philosopher, Apollonius of Tyana (1st century CE).

While every effort has been taken (by going through digital editions of the original work which are available on the Internet), I haven't succeeded in ascertaining the identity of this Apollonius. However, the most likely candidate seems to be no. (1) - notice the laurel crown, surely more fitting to his role as an epic poet - a second possibility could be no. (3), while I'd surely rule out no. (2).

My people are on the streets again in Indonesia. Everywhere the state decides certain people's survival is not a priority, the same infrastructure gap opens. The only thing that fills it is people deciding to fill it for each other. The full list is at the link. Some requests are urgent, some are overdue, and all of them need movement. Jakarta, Bandung, North Sumatra, South Sumatra; <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/6/12/indonesian-students-protest-govt-policies-amid-economic-strain" rel="nofollow">students have been tearing down police barricades since 12 June</a>, naming what they are watching in real time: a government letting a <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2026-06-12/students-hold-heading-to-bankrupt-indonesia-protests-against-prabowos-policies" rel="nofollow">32% fuel price hike</a> become the benchmark for a wider cost-of-living crisis while spending <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2026/jun/12/indonesian-students-protesting-government-policies-economic-pressures/" rel="nofollow">268 trillion rupiah on programmes riddled with corruption</a>, <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2026/02/04/indonesia-perks-for-military-lawmakers-spark-dissent-protests" rel="nofollow">expanding military presence into civilian institutions</a>, resurrecting the logic of dwifungsi ABRI that Reformasi was supposed to have buried in 1998. The protest name this time is <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2026-06-12/students-hold-heading-to-bankrupt-indonesia-protests-against-prabowos-policies" rel="nofollow">“Heading to Bankrupt Indonesia.”</a> Precise, not dramatic.</p><p>I am watching this from inside Indonesia, which means I am watching it from inside the same economic conditions. <a href="https://abcnews.com/International/wireStory/indonesian-students-protest-government-policies-economic-pressures-grow-133810558" rel="nofollow">The rupiah is at 18,000 to the dollar</a>. Staple prices are up. The state is not going to redistribute its way out of this; it is going to extract its way through it, and ordinary people are going to absorb that extraction in their bodies, their budgets, their capacity to stay housed and fed and connected.</p><p>This is not a situation unique to Indonesia. It is the situation. Everywhere the state decides that certain people’s survival is not a priority, the same infrastructure gap opens. And the only thing that fills it is people deciding to fill it for each other.</p><p>That is what this roundup is.</p><p>The actual practice of showing up for each other inside conditions none of us individually created and none of us can individually fix. From each according to their capacity, to each according to their needs; this week, as every week, in the small and material and unglamorous form of moving money toward people who need it.</p><p>Below is this week’s list. The Last Philosopher is a book set in a world of magick, sorcerers, politics and new creatures. The maps accompanied with the various quotes provided for us make it feel as if you are in the story watching as it all unfolds before your eyes. Not only that, but the book is written with rich diction and some humour as well.

We are introduced to the character of Herschel and we read of his journey cross the desert. He has escaped prison and we read of all his different experiences and how he persevered for months. The people he comes across are all introduced with ease and their accents are even outlined in the dialogue, something which a reader can appreciate greatly.

More about Empris and specifics of the world we have been immersed into are explained bit by bit, never hurriedly and information is never given in an overwhelming amount. We uncover new things slowly and in awell-paced manner. It's also very interesting to read about the characters’ thoughts as well as learn the different customs of the people in this book.

I like how the author was able to not lose the plot or the storyline along the way. Instead, they managed to keep us interested to the very end. The Last Philosopher is written with great detail and vivid descriptions that allow you to see things that have been described as if they are right in front of you.

For those who are interested in science fantasy books, I can highly
recommend this one to you.
