To be quite honest, I didn't know how strongly I'd feel about this book because I don't read a lot of YA, and close sibling relationships are a bit of a foreign country to me. Still, expending one's horizons and an interesting premise made me start, and wow, what a captivating story. I fully read 75% of this in one evening because I wanted to know what happened next. If suspenseful YA is your jam, this will definitely be your jam, and if you're not sure, give it a go anyway. Treat yourself.

Rated John Varvatos: Rock in Fashion 8/10

I gave this to my husband for his birthday, since he loves the photography, many of the musicians, AND John Varvatos' clothing (never mind that he can't afford the clothing, but it is indeed beautiful). Sometimes the fashion-speak is not entirely my thing, but this is a great rock n roll book. I love the Paul Weller inclusions, and that some of Neil Casal's (from The Cardinals) photos of Ryan Adams and Liam and Noel Gallagher made it in. It's a fun book to look at.<br><br>More importantly though: SO MUCH BOWIE.

I've reviewed what is most likely the non-fiction book of the year: Jamie Fisher's 'Nobody Broke Your Heart: an intimate biography of Elliott Smith'.

This is a book that is greater than the sum of its parts. It actually widened my thought world about Smith's music, something I can say about very few music books.

Rated Doctor Who: Hunters of the Burning Stone 10/10

<div>I bought this comics collection a few months ago, knowing it was an older one, but not realizing right away that it was released around the time of Doctor Who's 50th anniversary. I figured it only right to read it this month, the time of the show's now-60th anniversary, and what a great story. The first 2 installments feature Amy and Rory, and they get the comics version of their companion send-off at the end, where we get to see some of their post-Angels life. The last story here though, the title story, with Ian and Barbara, is truly great. It really, really works, in its own timey-wimey way. Read this one, if you come across it.</div>

Rated Monster Kids: How Pokémon Taught a Generation to Catch Them All 8/10

A great overview from the top-up marketing campaigns that I experienced (in part) as a kid, not just about Pokémon, but also its competitors at the time. Pokémon, Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh! are the main focus, though others such as Mon Colle Knights and Medabots get more than passing mention.

I enjoyed all that's in it, since it tied together a lot of nostalgic elements from my childhood. I do wish the writer had gone into more detail about many of specific trends and marketing campaigns covered. As someone who's not from America, there's of course an international element missing to truly encompass my own experiences. The book, for example, talks about the big initial Pokémon hype petering out. That makes me wonder whether our own flippos gave it a longer lease on life here.
