Rated Upright Women Wanted 6/10

<div>This sounds like a backhanded compliment, and maybe it is a little, but I would have liked this better watching it than reading it, I think. The premise is good, though a bit "a metaphor for our possible future!" If this is aimed at older teen readers, then that's ok, but the writing style wasn't for me. We've got "side-long smiles" and "mops" and "shocks" of hair and other well-worn descriptors that can be twee when paired with the affected "Out West" cowgirl dialect. That said, it's a short book, a good premise, and always nice to have queer characters in a Western. Just not my fav. Ymmv!<br><br>Regarding the "diverse characters" question Storygraph has, yes there are mostly queer characters in this book (again, great!), but as far as I could tell, most of the characters are white ladies. Eerste deel sloeg me recht in mijn gezicht. De onverwachte hardheid in prachtige beelden. Het perspectief van het opgroeiende kind tov van de hopeloze vader. Ijzersterk. De spanningsboog voor mij brak echter na 'het schot'. Hoe verrassend en aangrijpend die scene ook is, erna was ik (helaas)de connectie met het verhaal en zijn personages kwijt. Het was voor mij als lezer niet duidelijk dat het om 5 korte verhalen en een novelle ging. Waarschijnlijk meer mijn 'fout' dan van Vann's boek.

A strange little book - a quick, enjoyable read, shot through with touches of dreamlike/fairytale weirdness. A woman flees her abusive home in New York in the 1950s and marries into a slightly mysterious family in New England; the book is told from the perspective of this woman (the Boy of the title - that's her name) and her daughter (Bird) but also revolves around her relationship with her stepdaughter (Snow). Lots of metaphorically rich stuff about race and gender in mid-century America.
