This book is fairly misrepresented in the blurb and people's descriptions, IMO, I don't think it's about female friendship and intimacy basically at all, and it's only barely science fiction. It's one of the most existentially horrifying novels I have ever read, though. It's about the death of an entire society and is clearly informed by the Holocaust.
