I would not say that I'm a rodeo fan, but I do live in a place where it happens, so I am loosely aware of what it entails. That said, a good writer (or writers, in this case) can make any subject compelling, and that's what Wolman and Smith have done here. I didn't know anything about Hawaiian paniolos/cowboys, and it was interesting to read about how they are different from their continental counterparts, plus the related history of the islands that created the job. The book is also a fair bit about Wyoming and their Frontier Days festival, where the paniolos would eventually compete, and I appreciated that the authors did not gloss over the difficult history of the displaced native tribes.

YES! This book OMG. Loved it. It is a western, but with hippos. That is just it. A crew of awesome people is organizing a caper, ow no "it is not a caper, it is an operation". Interesting stories that weave into each other, a bit like a farce but thrilling and engaging, rather than slapstick funny.

This book gave me an emotional reset the same way watching Fleabag impacted me. When I think about this book, I tear up. Both characters this book focusses on have a very unique experience with loneliness, family and friendship. The way Lovelace adapts to her new body and how she describes experiences like eating has stuck with me ever since I read this book. It's just beautiful. As for Pepper, I can't describe how much her story touched me without spoilers, so just trust me bro.
