Reading The Mercy of Gods
Rated The Stone Sky 8/10
Both weirder and grimmer than the first two, and leaning much more into the sci-fi elements of the series: a lot more about the *why* of the world beyond just what's going on in the present. It's elaborate and detailed, in the mechanics of the world and visual description, but also emotionally rich, to the point of being pretty heavy/intense. Overall the trilogy is a masterwork; I probably liked this one the least on its own but it's vital to the whole story.
Rated The Shell Collector 4/10
Maybe because I wrote them right after each other, but this book reminded me a bit about' The world according to Anna'. It is so clear the book wants to tell us a message and it is the same message as Gaarder's book: watch out, we are destroying the planet. But where the latter is at least magical and cute, this book has a thin and predictably corny plot.

The main character Maya Walsh is interviewing Ness Wilde, an superhot and single Elon Musk like type that comes from a family that has allegedly cashed in on oil and ruined the world while keeping the nicest beaches for themselves. But... it is really that way or is Wilde actually a nice guy? The ending is visible from a mile away, as is (spoiler alert!) the cheap sex and love story between the main characters. I expected a lot more from Howey this really lacks the mystery and deepness (pun intended haha) of Wool.
