Rated The Name of the Wind 10/10
This is hands down my favorite book in the fiction section. I suggest this book to everyone, even people who have repeatedly told me that they don’t read. I read (or listen to) this book, or book two of this series, literally once a month.
This is one of those books that takes a few chapters to really hook you, so I usually forgive people for not getting into it. If you make it past the chapters that take place in Tarbean, you will be finishing the book. If you don’t make it past those chapters, then you need to try again.
This is a fantastic book about a world where magic isn’t everything it is cracked up to be, and science kind of is. If you ever wished that Harry Potter had to do more than say something in Latin just so… and then *swish and flick* just so… in order to do something magical, this is your book.
There is a whole system of “magic”, which is more “scientific” than it is anything, and is much more convincing than “Wingardium Leviosa” *flick*. The world that Rothfuss builds is one of the best fictions that I have ever stepped into.
If you don’t like this book, that is fine. If you do, welcome to one of this generation’s greatest fantasy.
Rated Anaximander: And the Birth of Science 6/10
The history and science of Anaximander is fascinating, but the book lost me with some of its attempts at broader conclusions towards the end. I am not convinced the role of religion (or lack thereof) is as fundamental to Anaximander’s revolution as the author (laboriously) lays out.
