<div>I suffered slightly by jumping in to this portion of the Time War, having not heard the previous installments with the Eighth Doctor, but it was easy enough to get the lay of the land. I'm glad to hear more from the Doctor's great-grandson, Alex (played by Paul McGann's son, Sonny).</div>

<div>I respect that Cindy Sherman has a place in art history, but the first project in this book has blackface and that "character" is lit horribly, so I'm glad I found this book for free. It still had the music CD in the back, but I have not listened. Maybe one day out of curiosity, I will take it out to the car, but I can't say the book made it a priority.</div>

Rated [(Doctor Who: Dreams of Empire: 50th Anniversary Edition)] [ By (author) Justin Richards ] [April, 2013] 4/10

Much like the actual military, this tale of soldiers vying for dominance was a lot of "hurry up and wait." It took until the second half of the story for things to kick off, and once they did, there was a level of violence that is quite unlike a regular DW story, a distinct relishing in the villains' cruelty at times. Also, I did not care for the way Richards describes the women, of which there are very few. Even in times of stress or action, their bodies are described with cheap, schoolboy longing. I didn't wholly dislike the book overall, but it was definitely one of the weaker Doctor Who novels I've read.

Rated Electric Literature No. 5 10/10

From the first paragraph of Kevin Brockmeier's "A Fable For the Living" until the last line of Lynne Tillman's "The Original Impulse," I remained so glad that I'd purchased a subscription to the quarterly publication.<br><br><i>Electric Literature No. 5</i> is a fantastic collection, with all five stories bleeding into one another to make a cohesive whole. Each one deals with people trying to fill some void in their life, some unspeakable absence, even when their methods for doing so are unhealthy. These are flawed, interesting individuals, and I couldn't ask for more in a collection of short stories. Wat een beklemmend boek. Zeer gedetailleerd beschrijft hij hoe een op het oog goed huwelijk vanuit het niets kapot gaat. De schrijver ziet het aankomen, hij ziet het einde langzaam naderen maar merkt dat, zodra het proces in gang is gezet, hij het niet meer kan afwenden. Zijn vrouw heeft zich opengesteld voor een ander en daardoor is het onomkeerbaar. Het is zo geschreven dat het een immer aanwezige dreiging lijkt voor ieder huwelijk. <br/>Het enige dat in hun huwelijk onbegrijpelijk is, is dat hij haar aanmoedigt om het gevoel voor de ander door te zetten. Hij denkt dat hun liefde ook dit zal overleven. En daardoor doorstaat hij alles gelaten. Sterker nog, wanneer hij en zijn vrouw sex hebben, fantaseert hij er hardop over dat zij hetzelfde met de ander doet als met hem (en dat hijzelf er naar mag kijken). Deze vreemde aanmoediging doet het voorkomen dat hun huwelijk anders is dan veel andere en stelt mij gerust.

Rated Electric Literature no. 2 8/10

Lydia Davis' "The Cows" is easily my favorite story in this volume, and it's an overall strong collection of stories.
