Une histoire très facile à lire, d'une délicatesse incroyable, émouvante et prenante. On comprend ce que le protagoniste vit malgré son 'handicap', le monde tel qu'il le voit. L'auteur décrit à merveille ce que ressentent ceux qui ne pensent pas comme le commun des mortels. Une histoire prenante pour laquelle j'ai versé une larme. Vous ne verrez plus les personnes un peu 'bizarre' de la même manière après ce livre.

Will Storr takes the reader along on a journey among people with unconventional ideas about the world, meeting with a infamous holocaust denier, homeopaths and alien abductees. As the book progresses, Storr does a good job at showing how fuzzy 'truth' and 'facts' can actually be. The story is guided by the principle of 'audi alteram partem', and he makes sure to always show both sides of the case (how ridiculous something might seem). I agree with Storr's final conclusion that whenever a story - because that is simply how we as humans conceptualize the world - is too coherent, i.e. everything can be explained by causal relationships, we should be skeptical. In that sense, this could be both a conspiracy theory but also a scientific 'theory of everything' that aims to explain everything in a clear set of unbreakable rules. The book is also a good reminder that we should always at least empathize, although not necessarily sympathize, with those who differ in opinion. Everyone thinks that their set of believes is correct, but we are all prone to err, bias, and short-sightedness.

I usually go through and "highlight" my favorite lines, passages, and exchanges. I found myself holding my breath because of being enraptured at the depth of the prose. When I'd breathe out, I'd realize the long moment was still going. I'd have to highlight the entire book to capture everything. <br/><br/>I read this book many years ago. This was a re-read. I've always loved the way she looked at the world. Even more so now. What a gift to have her words, and to be able to pick them up at any time. <br/><br/>

There is something beautiful about celebrating the birthday of a man who helped humanity measure time. Khayyam was a brilliant scholar, respected for his work in mathematics, astronomy, and calendar reform.
His rubaiyat are small poems with a long shadow — a reminder that life is too brief to waste.
