A photo of the July 1936 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine. There is some reflective glare from the protective bag in which the magazine currently resides.

The full-cover illustration of French navy sailors standing in review on the deck of their battleship is a painting by "Prince Valiant" comic strip creator Hal Foster.

The Captain stands near enormous cannon turrets whose barrels protrude above the scene, the French flag waving above it all.

Hal Foster was a Canadian-American illustrator who began adapting Tarzan to comic strip form in 1928. He's credited as a major influence by famed illustrators like Frank Frazetta, Jack Kirby, Wally Wood, Bill Ward, and many more.

Foster's "Prince Valiant" didn't begin until 1937, the year after this issue of Popular Mechanics was published.
