Stout Grove

Stout Memorial Grove is a beautiful stand of redwoods in Northern California. The trail through the grove is short and sweet with access to the Smith River. We sat on the river bank and listened to the wind blow through the trees as the river ran lazy in the early fall.
I captured this image on the way back from the river.

Maroon Bells

I seek out certain destinations that fill this desire of mine to seek out God's beautify of this land.
It actually wasn't too long ago where I can recall first hearing of this place. It is said to be the most photographed view in all of Colorado.

Aspen Abstract

There is something about the aspen forest in Colorado that draws my attention. This photograph represents somewhat of a dreamy state walking through these beautiful trees. This image was done without any Photoshop manipulations. This was done through a longer than normal exposure where I was able to imprint the details while blurring it at the same time.

Tillamook Bay In The Fog

While traveling through Oregon I camped near the small town of Tillamook.
I spent some time walking down along the ocean and Tillamook Bay with the foggy shores of the Northwest.
The fog drifting in over the hills, the boats tied to the docks with their reflection bouncing off the near still water. These are mornings that I find peace in my mind.

One of my favorite places in San Diego besides the beaches, is Balboa Park. This park has it all from their world class zoos to their fantastic museums, gardens and theatres.
This image was captured early in the morning. I walked the streets and sidewalks around the different museums. This arch and the repeating patterns down the walkway grabbed my attention.

Wildcat Falls In Color

Wildcat Falls is a small waterfall by Yosemite standards. This fall would be considered large in most places as it falls 630 feet.
One of my favorite features of this waterfall is the lack of crowd that surrounds many of the other falls in the valley. One can sit below the fall and take in the sounds of the fall and the nature that is all around.

This beautiful waterfall is located in Yosemite Valley just a couple of miles from the western entrance on highway 140. This view will never be seen again as a large boulder landed essentially where the left corner of this image is.
The falls come into view at the top left corner of the image. The water drops straight down on the right hand side. On the left side of the image the falls fan out to fill the frame.
Captured with a slow shutter speed to give the water that nice silky feel.
The lush green forest frames the top right of the image.

Firefall

Firefall is a relative newly discovered phenomenon discovered in Yosemite National Park not to be confused with the old firefall that was manmade.
I've been to Yosemite on 8 different occasions trying to capture this and have been skunked 7 times. This year everything finally lined up properly and this was the results I achieved.

Firefall.

This is an image of what is known as the Firefall in Yosemite Valley.
The proper name of Firefall is Horsetail Falls. In Mid-February if everything is in alignment you can see this amazing waterfall turn into what appears as a ribbon of Lava coming off the mountain.
For this to happen many things need to line up, most importantly a clear sky in the afternoon.
The falls come off an area to the right of El Capitan, pretty much a shear cliff. The sun as it sets across the valley drops into an area that sends a focused beam of light directly onto the rocks beside the waterfall reflecting the light onto the falls giving the water this amazing orange glow.

Mariposa Grove

Just inside the south gate of Yosemite by roughly 1/2 mile you find the parking lot to this magnificent grove of redwoods. From the parking lot there are a number hiking trails that one can take that are easy to moderate hikes.
I had this whole grove mostly to myself. I had time to shoot undisturbed and completely enjoyed the experience.

This is an image of a couple of giant redwood trees captured in Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park.
The main focus of the image is a large redwood tree left center in the image. The bark of the tree looks very thick and the tree is extremely tall.
If you look at the lower left corner of the image you can see a split rail fence that helps give you an idea of just how large these trees truly are.
To the right of the main subject is another redwood, slightly smaller than the main subject. Between the two is yet a younger, smaller tree.
The forest floor is covered in redwood needles and small branches. The background shows a smaller forest of trees.

Dixon Grain Elevator

Grain elevators to me are like old boats. They seem to develop their own unique look and character as they age and I don't think any two are the same.
So I purchased a new lens for my camera and I wanted to give a try. This grain elevator is roughly 20 miles from my home and I always wanted to explore the area and the elevator itself.

Bodie Mercantile

Bodie California is located in the Eastern Sierras and is the official ghost town of California. It is listed as a State Historical Park, earning that designation in 1962 when the state took over.
During the Gold Rush days, Bodie was a bustling small city of between 7 and 10 thousand residents. Multiple events including a couple of fires spelt the end of Bodie.

Captured at the Bodie State Historic Park. This is an image, a look into the past, of the interior of the Bodie Mercantile.
This image is basically a time stamp of the early 1930's. After easy gold was gone, the Bodie Railroad shut down and then with 2 major fires destroyed most of the town, things shut down.
Inside this shop are old fashion, wooden telephone on the far wall. The old cash register sits on the counter.
Behind the counter there are still a number of canned goods, bottles, and tins holding various items.
All of these items are covered with nearly 100 years of dust.

Working Boat

Up along the north coast of California is a sleepy little town called Ft. Bragg. Over the years Ft. Bragg has been many things, adapting along the way. Mostly now it is a tourist town where folks walk around and discover the past history of this town including the impact of logging the Redwoods in the area to the North Coast fishing.

Tis is an image of an old fishing boat tied to a dock in Noyo Harbor in Ft. Bragg, California.
The foreground of the image consist of the still waters of Noyo Harbor. The water provides a near mirror finish reflecting the boat on the water.
The boat itself is in need of maintenance as can be seen. The side of the boat is missing most of it's paint. There is actually a plank missing from the bow.
Behind the boat is an old shack. The shack shares many characteristics as the boat does. IT needs paint and possibly a new roof.

Theatre DeVille

The Theatre DeVille is a nightclub in Vacaville, California. The venue went through a major renovation where the new owners sunk a large amount of money into a state of the art sound system.
The building located has been occupied by a number of tenants including a theatre and a church just to name a few. The renovation to it's new form took a good part of a year.

Captured in downtown Vacaville, California, this is the Theatre DeVille. Remodeled in a art deco style the building stands out proudly on Main Street.
The bottom of the image is the marquee of the building. The name of the theatre sits prominently front center of the marquee. The building is painted in various shades of gray and black. The sign has been given a slight yellowish tint to give it an aged look.
On top of the marquee is a large replica of an old antique style microphone.
There are three windows, one of which is blocked by the microphone. The windows are tall and narrow with an arch at the top.

Joe's Barber Shop

Some barber shops seem to be the center of town. Joe's is actually much newer than many of the barber shops I see in small towns. But this is very fitting for the feel that I was trying to get.
The red, white, and blue barber pole on the outside, the red leather chairs on the inside, old bottles of elixirs and what not set up on the shelf. This is my kind of place.

This is an image of Joe's Barber shop located in downtown Vacaville, Ca.
I was looking for a nostalgic look as walked through town that night. I think this fit well and I added some selective coloring to get the mood I was looking for.
The foreground has a city bench facing the front of the barber shop.
The exterior of the shop looks like it was built in the late 50's or maybe the early 60's. The front is made of a beige colored stucco look with big windows that let us look in to the old style shop. Below the windows are a couple of red panels.
Inside the shop you can see everything you would think you would find in an old shop.

Sonoma Valley Creek

I was hiking the Sonoma Valley State Park in late winter/early spring after some pretty good rains.
This creek dries up by mid summer. I was lucky to come up to this park when I did as this little jewel was running fairly strong. The green hills and the moss covered rocks on the banks set this up nicely and I really enjoyed just sitting on the banks listening to nature.

I found this beautiful little seasonal stream in Sonoma Valley State Park located between the cities of Sonoma and Santa Rosa.
The foreground center of the image is the water of the stream after it dropped through a small cascade. The stream is lined with moss covered rocks on both banks.
The water drops down in the middle of the frame as it cascades over rocks and boulders. Using a slow shutter I was able to feather the water out to give it a soft silky look.
The background of the image shows the lush green forest that makes up a good portion of the park,

Golden Gate Bridge and Ft Baker

After getting fogged in at the top of the Golden Gate Bridge we took the elevator back down to the deck and this small clearing appeared.
This image captures the beauty of the Marin County the waterfront below. Below is the San Francisco Bay and then a little deeper into the background is Horseshoe Bay. Then behind Horseshoe Bay is Ft. Baker.

Avalanche II

So as the title suggest this is the 2nd image in a series of avalanches. Just kidding, the series starts with Cornice Blast.
Cornice Blast shows how this event got started. Avalanche 1 show the run of snow midway over the face of the cliff here. Now Avalanche II shows the avalanche touching down once again as it moves toward the main traverse and easiest way down the mountain at Snowbird.

The avalanche comes into the image from the top center/left. It drops down over the cliff. The snow hits an area that is like a bowl. The snow hits and starts to fan out over this lower section.
Around the landing of this avalanche are more snow capped rocky cliffs.

Yosemite Valley Panoramic

This is a panoramic image of Yosemite Valley. I created this by taking a series of images from the Tunnel View parking lot and stitched them together.
This was taken in early spring so Bridal Veil Falls was flowing at capacity in the lower part of the image. This image captures most of the major formations in Yosemite Valley.

Sunrise on the Petaluma River

The Petaluma River spills into San Pablo Bay just north of San Francisco. The Petaluma River was important to the growth of the young and booming city of San Francisco during the gold rush days. Petaluma had a large poultry processing centers. Schooners would sail the Petaluma River in order to deliver the goods from Sonoma county to San Francisco.

There are a number of boats tied to this dock halfway down the river. There is a mixture of an aluminum row boat, a couple of sailboats that are in need of some loving, and a larger fishing boat.

Lakeville Barn

Lakeville highway in Sonoma County runs south out of Petaluma and empties out on highway 37.
Thirty years ago the land along Lakeville highway was mainly old family farms where cows and sheep were common.
Today there are few of the farms that were there when I first started traveling the road. This is one of them.

The foreground of the image shows a white wooden fence. Inside of the wooden fence is a smaller chain link fence that encloses a small holding area for livestock.
The barn is old and weathered. If it was ever painted the paint has long flaked off and faded. The structure is still sound without any gaping holes to be seen.
The sun is just coming up and is shining on the front of the barn. Behind the barn the coastal hills/mountains rise up.

Water Play

I travel to Yosemite Valley on a regular basis to hike and to shoot photography. Sometimes when I'm not hiking I'll just sit and enjoy the surroundings. This is especially true while waiting for good lighting to capture some of the areas many landmarks.
I spent time searching the river for trout and just enjoying listening to the water rush by. That's when I spotted this little sparkle.

Water Play

This is an abstract closeup of a little spot of the Merced River in Yosemite National Park.
The water is flowing in a sweeping manner over rocks in the river bending the water in beautiful shapes. The water is a deep green with streaks of blue mixed in.
The water near the top of the image sweeps over a rock and the crashes into another submerged rock creating a little bit of white water and a little sparkle in the water.

Reflection of the Past

Years ago I had joined a photography club in town. One of our field trips was a trip out to the local airport to visit the hangers of WWII flying ace Duncan Miller.
In this image I have his Model A with a reflection of his C47 in the window. It seemed only proper that I convert the old war plane to a black and white.

Reflection On The Past

This is an image of an old Model owned at the time by WWII flying ace Duncan Miller.
The front grill sits in the left corner of the image. The frame of the radiator is chrome as is the circular headlight frame. The model A is painted a brilliant yellow with chrome highlights in many places. The side of the front fender has gill like vents.
Reflected in the window of this convertible is Duncan Millers C47 that he flew in World War Two. I took liberties and did some selective coloring in the window frame.
