Aurora colors come from atoms that are trying to shed some of their energy.
In very thin air, oxygen survives in a delicate, high-energy state that emits green light. In denser air, atomic collisions knock oxygen to a lower-energy state that emits red. Nitrogen is a robust emitter that glows bright in even lower, denser layers of the atmosphere.

These mean looking sunspots are the cause of the strongest geomagnetic storm (G5 - Severe) in 20 years!
They are really huge, spanning about 16 Earth diameters. Auroras are happening now and probably will continue over the weekend.
Pic with a 2415mm focal length Dall-Kirkham telescope with a 2X Barlow, a Baader Astrosolar filter, and a bandpass infrared filter (850 nm).

Victoria isn't particularly known for #aurora, but with the sun being at its solar maximum it's a great time to keep an eye on the night sky.
Despite spending about 9 weeks in Iceland and Norway (during late autumn/winter) the past 18 months, two of the best Auroras I've ever seen have been right here where you normally never see them. Fingers crossed for some more soon!

Is there a mobile app or online service for location based #Aurora alerts?
It's been many times that I hear about it too late and end up missing out (I'm living in a reasonably dark place now).
Last night I spotted aurora on the local webcam (I live at the foot of the hill in the middle), hiked 40 minutes to get a good view at midnight, only to see pitch dark sky :(
(I also learned that the pink glow on the webcam can not be seen by the naked eye, only my phone captured a tiny bit of it.)

New version of my time lapse of the northern lights above Göttingen on the evening of January 20, 2026 (one day after the major show). 74 individual images first reduced in size, then contrast enhanced and brightness reduced, then combined into an animation. 15-minute sequence.
