Albums the Fediverse Loved in 2025
And here we have it: a list of 151 albums (plus a few artists/labels in general) that kept 64 of us going in 2025, complete with tasting notes plus other tidbits in footnotes! Some stats:
- Nearly 75% of the albums are 2025 releases, with the rest stretching back to 1971.
- About 50% are from the US or Britain, meaning 50% are, well, not.
- A number of genres are represented, including ambient, classical, country, electronic, experimental, folk, hip-hop, J-pop, jazz, metal, noise, pop, punk, R&B, rock, et al.
- We didn't rank/vote since the Fediverse's musical tastes are far too diverse to do so meaningfully, BUT we had 8 albums submitted by multiple people, with *spoiler alert* Messa's 'The Spin' being our runaway top pick with 5 submissions!

Fediverse AOTY List – So Fedi, what albums got your attention in 2025? 🎧 🎶
Once again we’re compiling a Fediverse-wide, community-sourced Albums-of-The-Year (AOTY) list, of the albums – from any year – that rocked our worlds and got us through the last 12 months!
About 60 of us joined in last year and people seemed to like the idea of doing another round this year, so here we are! The call is open from now until the end of the year, then around New Years I’ll do up a blog post on the 1001 Other Albums site with the final list, complete with links to find the albums. You in?
The Rules:
1) Anyone with an account in the Fediverse can participate. I’ll include each submitter’s username in the final list, leaving off the instance unless asked to keep it in.
2) Reply/DM to this post with your top album(s) of the year, to a MAXIMUM of 3 per person. I also accept emails (johnmastodon@1001otheralbums.com) if you include your Fediverse username. You can also reply to the parallel toot on the automated account https://linernotes.club/@1001otheralbums.com@1001otheralbums.com.
👉 “Top” is absolutely however you want to define it – favourite, most listened to, most personally important, most thought about, most surprising find, representative of an artist you really got into, etc.👈
👉 “Of the year” does NOT have to mean the album was released in 2025. Your submissions can come from ANY year, so long as it was key in your 2025 listening.👈
3) The final list won’t be ranked or voted on, and will simply be ordered alphabetically. Multiple entries for the same album are most welcome and will be noted in the final list.
4) Notes/reasons for your picks aren’t necessary but totally welcome and, if included with your submission, I’ll probably put them in the footnotes like last year.
Feel free to boost this as widely as possible, I'd love as many people to join in as would like.
In the meantime, we’ll continue going through our 1001 Other Albums list and will have a handful of regular spotlights before the final Fedi AOTY list is posted. Prolific post-punk revivalists at top of their game. Favourite track: Come Hang from the Rooftops

Needs no introduction. Fave: Drone:Nodrone
3. Ride - Interplay
Shoegaze legends, were no 2 until The Cure turned up. Fave: Last Frontier
4. Sleater-Kinney - Little Rope
Raw, feminist riot grrl. Fave: Dress Yourself
5. Chelsea Wolfe - She Reaches...
Raw, feminist electronic. Fave: Unseen World
My Album Of The Year is: "Lingua Ignota Pt. 1" by Persefone.
I chose the album as my AOTY because I was eagerly awaiting the release and not a single song on the EP disappoints! Every single one picks me up and combines the familiar Persefone sound without being stingy with refreshing new elements. I attended their live concert shortly after the releases and couldn't be happier! Great band, awesome show, nice crowd! Can't wait for Pt. 2! 😍
