I've finished: The Four Profound Weaves by R.B. Lemberg

I was introduced to R.B. Lemberg when they were a guest on a podcast. I decided to check out her work but found that her only book available in audio was The Four Profound Weaves.

It's a bit strange to enter a universe at a late stage and through a side corridor. The world feels lived in but there are allot of major events that are only referenced in passing.

I loved the setting and the aging characters.

I liked the fact that Lenberg isn't trying to build a past that accepts LGBTQIA characters. So many novels surround the LGBTQIA protagonist with accepting characters even if the setting is a very traditional one.

A main character that transitioned at retirement age after living a full life as a woman was also different from many of the novels I usually read.

I've finished: Mad Sisters of Esi by Tashan Mehta

I've seen others treat Mad Sisters of Esi as a fantasy novel.

I read it as a Sci-Fi novel where the technology is indistinguishable from myth. A story of a multiverse with elder tech that can build and break worlds.

A novel about the power of storytelling with the mad love of sisters at its core.

A universal novel with a distinct Indian flavor.

I made the mistake of trying too hard to keep track of the characters and make sense of the meandering story line across time and space, leading to frustration.

I suggest just going with it, things will make more sense by the end.

I've finished: Children of Strife by Adrian Tchaikovsky

What an incredible ride.

Building on the foundation set by the first three novels in the Children of Time series, Children of Strife can concentrate on the pivotal moments of Tchaikovsky's uplift universe.

The story follows a terraforming project from Avrana Kern's generation, a desperate colony ship from the ruins of old earth and a rescue mission from the Panspecific society set up by the sentient beings we know and love.

Children of Strife highlights the difference between earth's colonization project from the beginning of Children of Time, led by egomaniacal psychopaths with the egalitarian alternative established by the end of Children of Ruin / Memory.

It is a clear indictment of today's tech billionaire class and their aspirations to become humanities gods and saviors.

I've finished: The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon

I was really interested to see what Chabon would do with an alt-history where Israel did not gain independence in 1948.

I was glad to see that the focus was on the refugees in the Jewish reservation, on their reaction to the traumatic events of the 20th century, their long history in the diaspora and their distress as their legal status in the US is about to expire.

I was actually disappointed when external politics entered the picture.

I enjoyed the description of the many traumatized and flawed characters within the pressure cooker of this ghetto.

We don't get to see much of the external world, but this doesn't feel like a novel set in 2007. The noir tone is a large part of that but it feels like a US that didn't go through the 1960 civil rights era. This may be part of the alt-history, but the novel feels like it is set in the 1950's. The more modern technologies feel tacked on and superfluous.

I can understand why Chabon extended the timeline, it gives him an aging founder generation to work with and gives the revolutionary further of the first half of the 20th century time to simmer down.

I've finished: Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

Black Sun was a fun read, I turned to it at every listening opportunity.

The world, the magic, the amazing animals.

The only thing that troubled me was the naivete of the characters. They feel like a bunch of teens with no notion of the dangerous world they live in. I loved spending time with them, but there was almost always a dissonance between the way they talked and thought and the reality they grew up in.

The only exception was Serapio, who is both competent and aware of the world he inhabits.

He is also one of the best portrayals of a blind character I've ever read. Despite his magical powers that let him see sometimes and perform outlandish feats. He mostly uses his regular senses skillfully, without invoking super human abilities.

AND HE NEVER, EVER, ASKS TO TOUCH SOMEBODY'S FACE!

I've finished: And What Can We Offer You Tonight by Premee Mohamed

On one hand this is a very straight forward story, murdered prostitute takes revenge on the privileged assholes that exploited and killed her.

But this is not her story, it is Jewel's story and she hasn't been freed by death and is still caught in the system, making hard choices, dealing with consequences.

I think I like Premee Mohamed's sci-fi better then her fantasy, and here she plays with a cyberpunk world, placing an exploited women at it's center.

I've finished: Doughter from the Dark by Marina & Sergey Dyachenko

Daughter from the Dark is perhaps the opposite of a cozy found family novel.

This is a Russian novel, the universe isn't there to cuddle you.

The view point character, D.J. Aspirin (Alexi) is the worst kind of reluctant hero, a self centered asshole of a man.

Thankfully we are not meant to sympathize with him, but with young Alyona who is the actual adult in the room. and she and one of the neighbors demonstrate actual care for others.

I've finished: His Master's Voice by Stanislav Lem

This feels like old science fiction. A group of scientists theorizing about a mysterious signal from space.

While somewhat dry,I love it! The scientific method in action. Raising hypothesis, challenging them, breaking them down.

At its heart is Peter Hogarth, a mathematician, representing pure science and ready to take apart the human bias inherent in the interpretations of the signal.

It is a philosophical big dumb object scenario.

It is also very much a product of the cold war.

I've finished: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Shabon

I didn't grow up with comics and don't have any nostalgia for them.

I do have an interest in history, culture, art and speculative fiction.

I'm also Jewish and Kavalier & Clay spoke to me on so many levels.

It is the story of Jewish refugees behind the golden age of comic books, about their experiences and motivations. It is the story of the comic book as an art form and cultural phenomena.

It is not speculative fiction, but it contains descriptions of the comics the characters create, as part of their journey and emotional development. Breaking the fourth wall Chabon gives us a glimpse into the creative process and the sociology behind the super hero comic book as a story telling art form.

There are points where the lines between the comic story lines and the characters reality seem to blend.

It is a very Jewish novel, but a secular Jewish novel, involving Jewish culture, history and oppression, but without involving belief in god and religious practices.

I really cared about the trio of characters, their successes, failures and distress, as they live through this terrible historical period .
