Resistance to the coup is the defense of the human against the digital and the democratic against the oligarchic.
Some argue that ai technology is more significant than electricity or the internet, and so it will spread fast. But there is little sign of this. Only 5-6% of American businesses said they used ai to produce goods and services in 2024, according to the country’s Census Bureau.
China built hundreds of #AI #datacenter s to catch the AI boom. Now many stand unused.
The country poured billions into AI infrastructure, but the data center gold rush is unraveling as speculative investments collide with weak demand and DeepSeek shifts AI trends.

I was listening to a podcast where the guest argued: when it comes to art, today's AI is like a tool, but in the future, maybe it could be an artist.
As he explained why, it became clear why I disagree with him. He defines "art" as a product that is valued by art critics and by consumers. I agree that AI generated content may become more common and broadly accepted in the future, but I don't think that's a good thing, and I wouldn't call it art!
I see art as more of an activity than a product. An artist does art. Whatever the output of that process is, valuable or not, is also called "art."
Am I saying only humans can make art? Not at all. But to be "art" it has to be self-expression. The artist must have something to say. As long as we are designing the AI, training it, and prompting it, then it will be a tool. Without us it has no initiative, no opinion, and no creative urge.
An excellent summary and analysis of George Dyson's "Analogia," a work discussing the emergence of technologies outside of our control. There are two major takeaways for me:
1. Computation was originally probabilistic - electrons moving through vacuum tubes. We are now returning to an era of probabilistic/statistical computation, rather than deterministic.
2. The possibility that this new era of probabilistic computing will lead to the emergence of technologies outside of our control is nothing new. As Dyson argues, this "fourth era" of "intelligence in the cloud" is a return of sorts to the first era, when we attempted to communicate with deities who worked and moved in mysterious ways according to enigmatic motivations.
Here's a sample quote:
"A belief that artificial intelligence can be programmed to do our bidding may turn out to be as unfounded as a belief that certain people could speak to God, or that certain other people were born as slaves. The fourth epoch is returning us to the spirit-laden landscape of the first: a world where humans coexist with technologies they no longer control or fully understand. This is where the human mind took form. We grew up, as a species, surrounded by mind and intelligence everywhere we looked. Since the dawn of technology, we were on speaking terms with our tools. Intelligence in the cloud is nothing new. To adjust to life in the fourth epoch, it helps to look back to the first."

it's nice to see reporting that doesn't mince words.

Tbh this is true. From what I can see in China, the real #AI stuff is barely talked about. #Deepseek is just a side project for a company that has more robust AI doing investment stuff. (They literally had spare parts lying around and didn't want them to lie around doing nothing.)
In China, AI is being used to help doctors with diagnoses and treatments, improving factory operations etc. These are the real stuff.
I listened to an interesting podcast recently and the hosts said that that's the diff with AI in China - AI is used to help humans with productive tasks and are entwined with industry, meanwhile the focus and hoo haa in the West is about AI generating copy and images and replacing creatives 😅
