#introduction
New instance new intro!!
I'm somcak, a #librarian currently in #Ohio. I have 2 mini #dachshunds and 2 #cats. I enjoy all sorts of music, yes, even death metal on occasion!
I've been on Mastodon since October 2022, and this is my 5th server.
I use content warnings for all sorts of stuff, just trying to be considerate! I always make sure there's #AltText and #CamelCase for my own posts as well as those I boost. #Accessibility matters.
I enjoy learning about #history and #archeology, particularly the #neolithic. I'm also interested in #UrbanPlanning and how we can make communities greener. I have an #ebike and care about #CompleteStreets.
In solidarity with the blind and vision-impaired community, I propose that twice a year, on the World Sight Day and the Global Accessibility Awareness Day, fediverse admins disable images on their servers to highlight the importance of writing good image descriptions.
Who's in?

A few extra seconds of your time it takes to add a good image description can really improve someone's day.
"To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics."
"I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content."
Blind Sonos users have an important and rare opportunity to make our presence felt and our displeasure heard about the massive #accessibility regression in the new mobile apps.
Next Tuesday 14 May between 2 and 5 PM US Eastern time, three senior Sonos staff are conducting an “ask me anything” (AMA) session in the Sonos community. In attendance will be Diane Roberts, Senior Director of Software Development, Kate Wojogbe, Senior Director of User Experience, and Tucker Severson, Director of Product Management.
These are the key people in the company who agreed to the app being released in the inaccessible state it’s in, and they are the key people who need to take fixing it seriously.
Many people want to take some action that makes a difference. This is something you can do.
You can bookmark the page for the AMA. It is, https://en.community.sonos.com/events/sonos-app-redesign-ama-6
Try to become familiar with the forum before Tuesday, because while it isn’t completely inaccessible, it’s not the best and a little quirky. You should be able to sign in with your Sonos ID.
Perhaps compose your question thoughtfully ahead of time and have it on your computer, so you can paste it into the AMA when it goes live. It will not hurt for Sonos to understand how upset and inconvenienced many of us are by what they have done. We can do that firmly while remaining polite.
They need to understand, the best way to make us go away is to fix what they broke. We won’t be quiet until we get back what they took from us.
Happy contributing.
Have any other @MonaApp users noticed a sudden lack of image descriptions being filled in automatically from captions in the Photos app on iPhone, or have I somehow managed toggle a setting?
Last night i tested some apps with text to speech just out of curiosity. Just listening that the things it depict sound right at all.
I can't fully test things because i am not in a spot to do so, but this is something anyone can do really. Enable text to speech, click around your app, make sure that all fields, buttons, texts and things are described. Make also sure that you can use keyboard only to move around.
If you want to help with #Linux #accessibility this is something anyone could try to do and fix! It will not make things perfect necessarily but it really does help. You dont have to even write code, you can document things and then make a bug report!
I learned a lot from this @LateNightLinux podcast episode and i highly recommend anyone who makes apps and websites to listen it! Even if youre not on linux!

Asking for recommendations for good quality large button phone or alternative for #VisuallyImpaired non tech savvy 97 year old.
Should be -
- corded (could be cordless if big enough buttons)
-analog landline RJ11 (not voip)
This photo example here shows up in multiple search results under different brand names, but they're all the same phone and very poor quality.
Any help hugely appreciated:

not going to lie, one of the worst side effects of #WCAG has been the obsession with reading the tea leaves of what a particular SC means (many of these written almost 20 years ago), which SC to fail things under, and generally an obsession (from industry/product owners) to satisfy WCAG ... rather than focusing on actual #accessibility (which often goes beyond WCAG, or involves things that simply fall between SCs, or are just "best practice" rather than hard fails). but it is what it is... #a11y
I pushed an update to #DOStodon (the #Mastodon client for MS-DOS):
- Fixed a bug when viewing threads in notification screen.
- Implemented setting for CW toots (default collapsed or visible)
- Fixed dates
- Fixed image viewing
- Added help to toot editor
- Changed some colors
- Updated #curl to 8.9.1
- Added ALT text for image uploads
Grab it at https://github.com/SuperIlu/DOStodon

I do like how the missing alt text icon is now more prominent, but I do wonder if this is enough to get people to add descriptions to their images.
I actually opened an issue addressing this last year.

I don't really think much about those reading time indicators, I certainly don't use them on my own websites, but @baldur makes some good points.
"To be meaningful, a reading time estimation algorithm needs to take a number of these variables into account. The bare minimum would combine text complexity [...] and vocabulary, with length and the median level of schooling of the assumed audience to get a rough estimate."
Gringos, describe your images! So much cool stuff we'd love to share #AltText #accessibility
Text detection from images is available right inside the attachment preview window of Mastodon clients. This makes adding meaningful #altText a breeze. Here's hoping that these kinds of thoughtful features push #accessibility support within the Fediverse even further.
Well done, @MonaApp!
Except please type #FediFC rather than #fedifc - it makes life easier for screen reader users and dyslexic people amongst others. #Accessibility https://mstdn.ca/@thatdosbox/113136253210292773
Anyone else using #VoiceOver on #Mac find that composing a post in @MonaApp is broken? I can’t review what I’ve typed. #Accessibility
The next blog post for #TheFutureIsFederated will focus on #accessibility.
With everything I have been learning about #AltText, #CamelCase and screen readers, I am deeply embarrassed and sorry about my previous Mastodon display name.
All the emojis (pencil, sparkle, camera) and TWO asterism symbols (before/after my name) could have caused problems for people who use screen readers.
I'm so so sorry, I didn't know. I removed everything and I'm only keeping one asterism symbol after my name
Oh nice, Mastodon is getting an alt text reminder.

Very pleased and a little nervous to announce that I got to write a bumper post for @csstricks!
For Americans who are more outraged by the language used than the lack of accessibility:
I am a cat. I am permanently outraged.
Here is me outraged that people still think it's OK to tell disabled people to be gentler with the abled humans because we might upset them, the poor things. #Cats #CatsOfMastodon #Accessibility #Disability
I created my first Django Trac ticket. Milestone?
It has not gone through triage yet, but at least it describes an accessibility issue that uses only dashes as an option value.
"Allow customization of the blank option in select dropdowns."

Audio description — the narration track that describes visual elements of videos for blind and low-vision folks — is leveling up, and "The Penguin" is a perfect example of how. Most of the team members narrating the audio descriptions for the "Batman" spinoff are blind, and were consulted on how to make the descriptions richer and more meaningful, such as adding details about characters' micro-expressions and visual elements with symbolic meaning. Their vocal performances add further layers. Here's more on the process from @Variety.
