1. Finally, my fifth attempt at a fully functional teapot was a success!! It pours beautifully and looks super cute. (photo attached)
2. Hosted my cousins from Pittsburgh overnight while they were on their way to Chicago. My daughter came in from Detroit for the mini family reunion. Everybody ate VERY well!
3. My dog was very charming throughout the visit and loved meeting new people (the cousins). They were smitten with her.
1. Managed to change the ink on our Brother laser printer despite being bamboozled by the wordless IKEA-style instructions. Who knew the drum was connected to each color cartridge? HP never prepared me for this madness.
2. Ventured out to a local garden and was greeted by the koi in the pond. They’re obviously used to being fed when a human appears. I had nothing to offer. I felt bad about because this little guy swam over quickly.
3. Again found a beautiful sunset photo from our vacation last year on Lake Superior. We were staying at a cabin once owned by my grandparents and it was the first time dad and I stayed overnight there in nearly 50 years.

1. Thankful for my 91+ year old dad. Despite his frustrations at aging, he continues to show and exhibit much grace and compassion to those around him.
2. Thankful for the cooler weather here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
3. Thankful for the 2 characters pictured here - our 10+ year old sister and brother black cats. Girlie on the left and Fat Boy on the right. They are as different from each other as they can be.

1. Made a large pot of dog food for our princess (ground beef, liver, eggs, kale, shredded sweet potato, blueberries, and lots of supplements). She loves my cooking! (photo of dog attached)
2. It is still asparagus season in Michigan! Tonight they will be roasted and served with pasta.
3. Gave gratitude to indoor plumbing and a hot shower.
1. Both of my cherry tomato plants gave forth their first blooms! They're still very small plants but will grow to become mighty warriors of the garden. (photo attached)
2. Harvested some leaves off all six basil plants to add to a homemade pasta sauce for dinner tonight. And it's not even June, yet! Insects are attacking but they're still edible for humans. (photo attached0
3. Sweet Pea the Ewe is doing a good job guarding the snap peas. (photo attached)

1. I made my first woven basket at a workshop held at the Michigan Folk School in Ann Arbor. The tips of my fingers are numb, but it was a very enjoyable day in the beautiful countryside. (photo attached)
2. It's the longest my dog has ever been in the house by herself. No mishaps!! Hurray!!
3. Thankfully, I had leftovers that I could eat for dinner. My fingers would have a hard time cooking from the brutality of weaving rattan.

1. After 4 years of encouraging the growth of white clover over grass, I have finally achieved more than 50% clover in my backyard. (photo attached)
2. My dog is often fearful of what lurks in our tiny backyard--usually bunnies and robins. But today, she pranced out there like a fearless champ! (photo attached)
3. My mini wildflower meadows are blooming. It will last through Autumn, with different flowers emerging over time. (photo attached)
1. Purchased a new couch and chaise lounge to replace our 30-year couch and recliner.
2. Girlie is thrilled with the most expensive cat bed that her humans have ever purchased for her. Hoping she will occasionally let me sit in the chair.
3. Happy to spoil this cat as she has been the sweetest comfort to me these past several months.
1. Got dad’s gravesite memorial service scheduled for early September.
2. Working towards my two-month road trip back to Michigan in early May to start sorting through his/my brother’s place and property. This first trip will be called “The Long Goodbye”.
3. Planning alternate day trips and multi-day trips around the Midwest so if the sorting and organizing gets to be too much, I can drop everything and run off with my camera to take a break. Hoping to be able to visit all 5 of the Great Lakes during this time.
Bonus: For the return trip in September, I’ve started planning for a mini family reunion after the graveside service. This will be my “Closing the Circle” trip.
Grief doesn’t happen all at once. The Long Goodbye is the process of letting go over time. Closing the Circle is that final return—to finish, to honor, and to move forward.

While in downtown Roanoke, Virginia last year, we went to see the view from the roof of the Center in the Square building. The immediate approach of the koi makes me laugh.
2. The U of M men’s basketball team won the national championship last night for the first time in 37 years.
3. Fortunate to get an appointment later this week for a cortisone shot in my right knee. Last one was August 2019 so I’ve been lucky.

Three good things today:
The steady rhythm of Lake Superior waves at sunset — that familiar, grounding sound that hasn’t changed.
A memory from 2024 with Dad, staying at my grandparents’ cabin west of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, a place that was theirs until the 70s.
Realizing that even now, that shoreline still sounds like home to me.

Weather at Dad's place today (April 2) in Upper Michigan: mostly freezing rain and sleet right now, with another 5 inches of snow expected on top of it. This has truly been one of the harshest winters in decades. I spoke with someone up there who said the two back-to-back storms in mid-March alone dumped 54 inches (137 cm) of snow. 😬
Three good things:
1. Even with all this weather, the camera is still giving me a window into home.
2. I'm looking forward to making several side trips while I'm in the Midwest, visiting old familiar places and some new ones, too. All with my camera in hand. Hoping to offset the inevitable moments of grief and sadness as I sort through my dad and brother's belongings.
3. It's good to finally feel excited about getting out with my camera again.

1. Finally found a cell phone holder to take hands free (voice control) photos thru the windshield. (Quzudn iPhone MagSafe Car Mount Charger from Amazon). Now to see if it stays affixed to the dash.
2. Rain has finally stopped for now.
3. Nurse appointment revealed the symptomless nasty ear infection is finally gone after a 10 day course of antibiotics.

1. Still had a good day despite having someone answer my call by saying “Go F yourself”. I’d gotten the number correct (I hadn’t dialed wrong). I was trying to contact an estate sale company in another state. A friend suggested that when they saw my number and it wasn’t local, they figured I was a spam caller and that’s why they answered the way that they did. Maybe so, but I’ll never call them again to find out. I mean, really, couldn’t they just let it go to voice mail?
2. The floaters and light flashes have somewhat subsided, which is a relief.
3. This extra time at home while I wait for my follow up appointment with the eye doctor has given me time to slow down a bit and to continue to get my things organized for the upcoming road trip. I’m preparing for a two month stay to start sorting through my dad and brother’s things.
1. Wearing my 26-year-old t-shirt from the Wisconsin State Fair - Millennium 2000. Had to do only minor repairs on the seams, but it's held up remarkably well!
2. Cleared out our hall closet and donated a bunch of towels and blankets to our local ASPCA.
3. Final preparations are underway for my upcoming road trip back to Michigan to take care of my Dad and brother's place and things. Many side trips with my camera will be taken to ensure I have an escape valve for all my emotions and feelings. Stay tuned for random photos from my travels!
1. No tear of the retina was found today (detachment of the vitreous is what's causing the floaters and flashing lights).
2. Trip to Michigan delayed for a month until I'm rechecked, but that just gives me more time to settle things here at home first (and to plan my route to and from Michigan).
3. Got the new lens for my new full-frame camera, and wow, what a difference it makes for my photographs!
1. Had the bathroom and kitchen professionally cleaned on Monday, including all the ceiling fans. The difference is remarkable.
2. Had the grass mowed this morning by a local fellow. It hadn’t been cut since last September when my brother last took care of it.
3. Coming here for two months to sort through things was absolutely the right decision. While I can’t move the heavy items, I’ve been able to bag, box, and donate many useful things to local charities.
Bonus: The cooler Upper Michigan weather has been a welcome change, though we’re expecting a high of 99°F next Monday. With no air conditioning, those freshly cleaned fans are about to earn their keep!

1. I was channel surfing on Sling TV and happened to catch the very end of Saturday Night Fever. It was just enough to send me straight to the soundtrack.
2. One album turned into another—first Kool & The Gang (Get Down on It and Ladies Night), then Earth, Wind & Fire (Let's Groove), and now Chaka Khan (I Feel For You). I've had the music turned up and haven't wanted to stop listening.
3. A good reminder that music really is good for the soul. It has an amazing way of lifting my mood and changing my whole outlook.
1. Thankful the cleaners came last week and cleaned years of dirt, grime and nicotine from the ceiling fans. Expecting a high of 95F / 35C here in Upper Michigan today with a heat index of 105F / 40.5C.
2. Old habits from childhood kicked in - close up all the windows and draw all the shades early during a heatwave and you don’t have air conditioning.
3. Making good progress in the clean out of my dad and brother’s place after being here a month.
