X - Review

Well, for a film whose content can be summarized as simple as "Texas Chain Saw Massacre meets Boogie Nights with slight overtones of Psycho", this one's way better than it has any right to be. A throwback to 70s slashers in both content and style, this is as simple and straightforward as it's ever gonna get and that's exactly why it works so well. Just like its most infamous piece of inspiration, this flick takes a while to find its gears only to transcend its b-movie origins in a relentless final act. The buildup is done a lot more skillfully here though, actually crafting a set of quite appealing characters rather than the bland featureless tokens lacking any plausible motivation of the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I'm psyched to see where Ti West is gonna take this loosely connected series, kinda hoping the whole work might turn out something more meaningful than just the sum of its parts. But for now i'm just gonna say: Nothing quite as scary as sexually repressed elderly evangelicals!
