Haven’t seen a german movie in a while. Probably that’s because, being german myself, i’m not all that thrilled watching other germans walking accros germany doing very german things. I liked this one quite a bit though. While the feature-length debut by writer/director Helene Hegemann who also penned the novel it’s based on does have its rough edges and suffers from some uneven performances (the kinda wooden, television-style phoned in delivery of dialogue i notice in so many german productions, but maybe that’s just the curse of having actors talk in your native language for a change), that can’t do much to lessen the impact of this glimpse into the feverish, dreamlike and horny-as-hell world of not-your-average-teenager trying to make sense of her not-your-average social surroundings, told with an amazing empathy, true emotional and psychogical depth, resulting in some kind of not-your-average coming of age tale… although the director decidedly rejects that term.
