A fascinating piece of magical realism, this retrofuturistic science fiction journey whose kickass jazz score perfectly auguments its often gritty yet wondrous atmosphere. The film is set in a future Luanda, Angola where, for some unexplained reason, air conditioner units have begun and keep falling off buildings. *Air Conditioner* follows security guard Matacedo on an extensive voyage through the city, tasked with getting his boss' AC unit repaired. In a rather loose, often surreal plot we witness citizens apparently able to communicate through telepathy, as if a particularly deep bond enables them to do so - possibly related to shared memories of the country's colonial past... memories that also seem to invade reality at a later point in an electronics repair shop full of old audio and video gear which, as the scatterbrained shop owner claims, "holds the people's memories".
