Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995)

This is a fun trilogy. They reboot Gamera with one of the same adversaries as the '60s movies, and Gyaos here, the evil flying dinosaur thing, even has the same goofy flat head shape, and even googlier eyes. But it's all a little more serious for the '90s. We get some pretty good female representation here, two main characters — an ornithologist who insists that Gyaos are not birds but everybody ignores her and says, "But what are we going to do about these birds?! You are the only one who knows about birds!" and a young girl played by Steven Seagall's daughter who has a psychic connection to Gamera. There is also a woman in the Gyaos suit, Yumi Kameyama, "because the designers wanted the monster to have a feminine image." The music is fun, too, I think. The scene where Gyaos snaps Tokyo Tower in half and builds a nest on top is pretty memorable. Some people in tonight's watchalong said it seemed like a ripoff of Jurassic Park, but I think this is a fun '90s action movie that could fit in with any of the big blockbusters of that era.
