45 Years (2015)

45 Years excels in the performances of the lead characters, especially by the ever beautiful Charlotte Rampling. Everything feels very natural and credible, painting a fairly bleak portrait of elderly loneliness. 45 Years is reasonably similar to Michael Haneke's Amour: a well-executed, realistic, melancholic glance into the lives of an aging couple. But 45 Years didn't crawl under my skin like Amour did. Amour deals with heavier subject matter, served with Haneke's powerful talent for raw, uncompromised drama, while I think 45 Years is a bit too subtle and casual to really leave a lasting impression on me like Amour did. I was also a bit surprised by the abrupt ending of 45 Years, although I can live with that decision.
