Finding Vivian Maier (2014)

it feels a little sensationalist and also watching John Maloof sign the prints is like... i don't know. and when he says he wishes she was there so she could get the money, i was waiting for him to add something about how that's why he's giving the money to charity or something. though i guess he put a lot of money into making prints and developing the rolls. i did read there was a copyright dispute in 2014 but haven't looked into it further. it's just my first reaction to the whole thing. edited to add apparently her estate came to a settlement with Maloof and "establishes a cooperative structure that allows Mr. Maloof to continue to bring Ms. Maier’s extraordinary photography to light while preserving her legacy." and yeah. it's also unclear if she did put her work out there during her lifetime if it would have been taken seriously due to class and misogyny, you know? it would have been cool if they talked to any feminists in the doc rather than Maloof and the former children she had nannied. like, talk about the actual work a bit more. brb cutting my hair into a severe bob after all these documentaries about oddball women artists
