My Life as a Zucchini (2016)

Whether it's drawn, 3D CG or stop-motion, animation is one of my favorite storytelling media. But lately the increasing level of commerce in major US animations — such as the superfluous sequels to the cash cows of Disney and Pixar — has diminished my interest in animation from that area. Luckily there are studios that still know how to practice the art of animated enchantment. For example, I love the stop-motion productions of Laika, and brilliant animes like Wolf Children. Ma vie de Courgette turned out to be one of those rare animated gems I'm glad not to have missed. It's a finely balanced blend of humor and drama, dealing with sad real-life subjects in a digestible manner. The beautiful artistic visual style perfectly complements the story. Ma vie de Courgette is a feel-good film in its purest form. It will warm your heart and make sure you'll wipe away some tears. I also loved Sophie Hunger's beautiful cover of Le Vent Nous Portera during the end titles.
