James and the Giant Peach (1996)

The last time I saw James and the Giant Peach was in an Amsterdam movie theatre when it was just released in 1996. I was quite enchanted back then. I rewatched it during Xmas 2016. Some of the magic has diminished as I've grown into a cynical old fart in the mean time, but there's still a little kid inside of me, somewhere deep inside. 😉 The best part for me is Roald Dahl's brilliant imagination. Tim Burton delivered a fine piece of stop-motion animation, and Joanna Lumley looks fabulously fucked-up in the live-action parts. On the downside — I'm a bit allergic to musicals, and had forgotten that the film is larded with stereotypical musical songs. But I've survived it. All in all, I think James and the Giant Peach is a pleasant feelgood film. Not a timeless masterpiece, but definitely no waste of time.
