Two English Girls - Review

Ah, the olden days when masturbation was bad for your eyes. But jokes aside, this was pretty damn good! What at first gives off the appearance of a beautifully photographed - yet also kinda routine - period drama, builds up to some unexpected emotional punch in the second half and it's mostly due to the empathy, grace and agency Truffaut allows for his protagonists, each of them as complex as the messy love triangle they're navigating while challenging and re-negotiating the morals of its time and - in many respects - still those of today. A bit like a more serious take on the director's earlier Jules and Jim (1962), shot like a vivid dream. Although it's not exactly at the core of this film, i really liked its observations about christian morals, religion-induced feelings of guilt and their ability poison the minds and relationships of those subjected to them.
