a review of 燃烧女子的肖像

This was every bit as good as i expected and way more captivating than i had anticipated from a movie that thankfully turns out to be way more about looking and the female gaze in particular, than it is about painting. This would be a true five-star movie if it weren't trying a bit to hard at one crucial point when it tries to make a bold statement, an emotional climax that comes across as too forced, its symbolism too blunt and its semi-diegetic musical cue feeling inappropriate in a film that's otherwise such a masterpiece of restraint, subtlety and grace. But then again, just "Portrait of a Lady" wouldn't be much of an audience draw, i guess?
