I really hate to dunk on this one as any feature-length independent animation piece is kind of a triumph on its own for even existing. Sadly, as imaginative its visuals and setup are starting things off, just as much does the film get dragged down by a meandering, often aimless and nonsensical plot. Any allegory in this is way too vague to convey a discernible message and instead of any thoughtful reflection all we get is a forced construct of by-the-numbers spielbergian '80s-to-mid-'90s action blockbuster mechanics on autopilot. Every moment past the 30-minute mark feels kinda derivative of something... of Mononoke and Nausicaä, of Jurassic Park, fucking Avatar... and so the list goes on. As such, the film reminds me of some kind of R-rated spin on any Cartoon Saloon production... often brilliant on a visual and worldbuilding level but bland as fuck, risk-averse and kinda mechanical in its storytelling posing the question: What's the fucking point?
