The Revenant (2016)

The Revenant left me with a very ambivalent feeling. I'm going to resort to a pros and cons summary. Beware, spoilers ahead... Pros: • Absolutely gorgeous cinematography, period. The majority of my rating is an award for the many painterly shots. • The dream-like atmosphere is effectively complemented by Ryuichi Sakamoto's hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. • I loved the raw, gritty realism. • The revenge scene was satisfying. Cons: • The bear was so obviously computer-generated that the bear fight didn't impress me at all. • The amount of catastrophes DiCaprio survived diminished the story's credibility. • The character of DiCaprio's son did not manage to win my sympathy. • The scenes with the apparition of DiCaprio's deceased wife were a bit too sappy for me. • The movie should have been about half an hour shorter, because DiCaprio's seemingly endless survival trip started to drag in the course of the movie. I also couldn't help having to giggle because of the constantly crawling and groaning DiCaprio, looking like a fluffy football mascot in his bear fur outfit.
