The Emigrants (1971)The Emigrants is a very realistic, authentic reflection of the life of poor Swedish farmers in the 19th century, looking for a better life in the United States. 19th century agricultural life without cars, planes, phones, stupid jobs and other modern-day distractions had its poetic side, but it could also be quite boring and miserable. The director films a group of desperate emigrants as if it's an observing documentary. The Emigrants is an impressive but slow production, making the film's length of about three hours actually feel like four hours. The ending is clearly a bridge to the 1972 sequel The New Land, but to be honest I don't really feel like watching another three hours of this subject matter.
